Virtual Classes are here! You are invited to participate in our regularly scheduled virtual classes continuing Monday, April 6th. (Zoom access info sent via email) In order to help keep our training up and keep our dojo community connected, I thought we could try having virtual karate classes on Monday nights. The idea is that we would all participate in the class from our homes using a video conferencing tool called Zoom. The classes will be practice sessions, during whi...ch we will review some basic techniques together. They will run on Monday nights from 7:00 pm to 7:30 pm. Please visit the link below for more information and tips on preparing for the virtual classes. http://www.torontoacademy.com/event/2020_virtual_class/

I have had an overwhelming response from new people who want to join us in our virtual classes and learn about authentic Karate-Do. If you are considering trying Karate at our school, I recommend you start by joining in any Saturday class which is designed for beginners to learn basics. Please introduce yourself to the Chief Instructor when you join the class.... There is no obligation for you to buy a uniform or sign up to pay for future classes. You can contact me directly at any time (24/7) if you would like to become a member. [email protected] 416 409 3084

History of our dojo For the first 3 decades, most of the new students were young adults who came from the U of T. Over the last 2 decades more new students have been young families and children. The Toronto Academy of Karate today So who are we now?... I know who we are not we are not a club! We are not a kick boxing club! We are not a mixed martial arts club encouraging violence! We are not a McDojo offering a babysitting service! We are an academy of higher learning, with many dedicated senior Black Belts teaching authentic karatedo! And we are a family. a family built on respect! 2020 is the dawn of a new era! I believe that the TAK is the highest quality karate dojo in the country. I want to hear from you, to help me guide the dojo into the future. Together, we can make a difference in the world, one student at a time. My goal is to help as many people as possible find the joy for life that we have been blessed to experience. I hope I can count on your support. Please feel free to come forward with any ideas that you may have. Some of you have already been very helpful. Thank you, Sensei Bert Freeman

JAN 14, 2020 SCARBOROUGH CENTENNIAL RC POWER TEST RESULTS FROM OUR NEW KARATE SENSOR SYSTEM Here are the numbers from Tuesday night’s punching tests. The results are very good for everyone. Congratulations!... I will be providing the Sensor for testing in all our classes. It is very important that you maximize your one block and punch power so that you will gain the ability to stop any aggression immediately in a self-defence situation. The middle number (force) is the one we want to improve. This can be done by increasing your speed with block and punch training in every class over time. We will train towards improving the power of our punches, blocks & kicks and retest at a future date. PERSON SPEED/FORCE/PULL: Freeman 35/30/412 Michel 15/20/400 Hassan 15/25/332 Sagar 14/21/412 Mehta 14/18/68 Chauham 13/20/108 Yuen 13/12/348 Ahsan 12/7/- Demir J 11/20/144 Malik 11/11/144 Demir D 11/5/120

Sadly, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease, Dr. Burt Konzak Phd, passed away just before the holidays in late November of 2019. He was a great man, the Sensei and founder of our dojo 50 years ago in 1970. As a professor at the U of T, he taught Zen Philosophy. He was a writer and author of many successful books on karate-do and zen philosophy and he was a world-renown martial artist. He inspired thousands of karateka to become better and happier people and I am proud... to call him my mentor and friend for the last 43 years. As a professional graphic designer I worked closely with him for many years on promotional materials and the dojo logo. He appointed me as Sensei when he retired in 2011. I promised him that I would make sure that I would continue to lead the dojo with the same high standards of training, character development and spirit that he gave us all.
