Winner of #TOAF59 Best of 2D Works and the Mayor’s Purchase Award, Cheryl Rock (@blaquerock) completed her BFA at University of Windsor. Passionate about the power of diverse stories, Cheryl has a focus on reconnecting to oral tradition through imagery in her works with hand-cut, archival paper, and mixed media. Inspired by the desire to create dialogue with a diverse audience through commonalities in human experience, Cheryl makes this central to her artistic practice. View ...her current series, Re-visioning Royalty as she uses her two-dimensional pieces to communicate notions of beauty, resilience, royalty, and tenacity. By re-presenting the stories of the Black diaspora, Cheryl’s two-dimensional cut paper pieces explore Afrofuturism, Black identity, cultural hybridity, and document the tenacity of the human spirit. Today, we celebrate our Communications and Artist Relations Support extraordinaire Yi Tung (Lavender) Cheng (@lavenderchengtung) Lavender joined TOAF this past February as an intern and quickly became an essential member of the team and an integral part of moving the Fair online. Her contributions to TOAF have exceeded beyond what we could have ever imagined, and we cannot thank her enough. A recent graduate of Centennial College’s Post-Graduate Certificate of Arts Manag...ement and with a degree in Archaeology, Lavender has dedicated her time with us, managing our artist uploads in the back-end, updating our website, while also supporting TOAF staff. Because we can’t gather and celebrate Lavender’s birthday in person, we thought we would share just how grateful we are to know her. Happy birthday, Lavender!

#TOAF59 Honourable Mention for 2D Works Kaitlin Mason (@kaitlin_mason_) is an award-winning artist based outside of Toronto, whose drawings are created by adding multiple layers of coloured pencil on wood. This layering technique builds the colour saturation and vibrancy of each fabric, creating a painterly effect. The raw wood panel adds an additional element of organic detail which is unique to each piece. Her drawings investigate the figure and the vacancy of human presenc...e as a purposely arranged garment. By playing with light and shadows, the piled piece of fabric transforms a mundane item into a sculptural entity. The small sample of fabric belongs to something larger, something more, something left unknown; it is a moment captured, never to be ‘that’ again. #TOAF59 Best of Paper Award Winner Kim Land (@aurorasculptures) talks about the process of creating intricate light sculptures with paper (pictured): "I have always had the need to work with my hands, so when I found this medium, naturally, I had to try it, too... These light sculptures are either 10 layers of tissue paper or 2 layers of rice paper with a specialty paper as the final layer. Small pieces of paper are layered individually with the end result being a very organi...c and fluid feel to it. The light that is emitted is subdued and ambient which most people find very calming."
