Baby Saved at Roadside By Ron Fanfair A young family is thankful for the quick actions of a Toronto Police officer to help save their months-old son.... On November 18, Const. Ivan Yeung attended a call for a baby in distress at University Ave. and Richmond St. W. Rob Scheinberg was taking his son Liam, who had spent months in hospital with his twin sister, Elise, after being born prematurely, for a doctor’s appointment when he noticed he had stopped breathing. He called 9-1-1. I was at Dundas St. and University Ave. when the call came in, said Yeung. When I got there, I saw a baby lying on the sidewalk and the fists appeared to be clenched tightly. As I got closer, I realized the chest wasn’t moving and the baby wasn’t breathing. Yeung performed CPR on the young boy for about 90 seconds before firefighters and paramedics arrived and transported Liam to the Hospital for Sick Children for treatment. The officer credited his training, even channelling the words of Training Sgt. Oliver Febbo who retires at the end of this month. The training I got from him was in my head the whole time, he said, of giving the delicate child chest compressions. I just could hear him telling me to use your fingers to push down on his chest. I heard him telling me ‘you have to save that baby.’ I just did what he taught me at the Toronto Police College. Every Toronto Police Officer is trained in First Aid and requalify regularly. The boy’s parents are eternally grateful to Yeung who visited the family home on December 20. Liam had a heart procedure and we have been through so much, Liam’s mother Danielle Scheinberg told the Toronto Sun as the parents held their now five-month-old children. We thought everything was OK now. I was here at home and suddenly Rob (her husband) called me panicking and sent me pictures with Liam and about 10 doctors around him. Hearing what the Toronto Police Constable did and all the police units and how you did the CPR and the Fire Department came together with the police and blocked off the street and just worked together so beautifully to save my son’s life, I can’t thank you guys enough. It could have been the worst day of my life. But at the end of the day, it was the best day of my life. This is the second time in four months that Yeung has averted a crisis. He and Const. Chally Phan, who both joined the Service 10 months ago, were riding together around 4.30 a.m. on August 3 when they received an unknown trouble call at Harbourfront Centre. A female was in the water and unresponsive when they arrived on the scene. Yeung, who was a lifeguard, jumped into the water to help rescue the woman.

Care Packages for Homeless at Christmas By Ron Fanfair Members of Toronto Police Records Management Services (RMS) filled 50 shoeboxes of gift donations for Haven Toronto.... The boxes were filled with gift cards, gloves, hats, socks and other essential items. This was a collective effort by RMS and we provided the less fortunate with a little piece of Christmas, said A/Director Rita Vigna. Big thanks to all that contributed to our shoeboxes. This small gesture will bring a little hope and happiness for these homeless men. Haven Toronto is the only facility in Canada dedicated to serving homeless men over the age of 50. Teamwork Leads to Guns By Ron Fanfair Two firearms were seized and two young men are facing gun-related charges after officers responded to sounds of gunshots in the Fenelon Dr. and Graydon Hall Dr. area on November 2.... It’s alleged that officers arrived on scene and located a vehicle in the shooting. They followed the vehicle as it fled. It was abandoned a short distance away. A Norinco rifle was located in the abandoned vehicle with two fully loaded magazines. On November 14, the Central North District Major Crime Unit executed search warrants at two residences in the Don Mills Rd. and Graydon Hall Dr. area. They located a .40 caliber Sig Sauer semi-automatic handgun with ammunition and a laser detachment. The firearm was stored in an unsafe manner, fully loaded and readily accessible to a child. Nicholas Juman, 19, of Toronto, faces 11 charges, including possession of a prohibited weapon and possession of a firearm obtained by crime. Estime Ndayiheazgiye, 18, of Toronto, is facing 13 charges. Supt. Bryan Bott, the Superintendent of Toronto Police Service Central North District, said the arrests and seizure of the firearms are the result of excellent police work and the co-ordinated efforts of several units. The work done by the responding Primary Response Unit (PRU) officers and the follow up done by members of Public Safety Response Team (PSRT) and the Community Response Unit assisted our Major Crime Unit in identifying suspects, he said. Further investigation by our Major Crime Unit led to the execution of search warrants, with the assistance of the Emergency Task Force and the seizure of another firearm. Officers Mobilize Toy Drive By Ron Fanfair When Consts. Doug Woods and Mark Zattler learned that the Salvation Army Etobicoke Temple Community Church at 2152 Kipling Ave. was low on gifts and clothing for kids, they went into action.... A group of people with a police van of toys Two officers with a security guard and toys The Neighbourhood Community officers raised money at the Division through a raffle. To supplement the money they got from the raffle, the officers approached local businesses and asked for donations, said Sgt. Jason Leitch. The toys were purchased at the Canadian Tire Store at Kipling & Rexdale Aves. who added another $700 in toys to help the community organization. A total of $2,600 was raised for the Salvation Army. Woods and Zattler filled a Canadian Tire van with clothing and gifts that were delivered to the Salvation Army on December 7. Rose Bryan, the Church’s Community & Family Services coordinator, runs the toy drive out of the church. We serve about 800 families during the holidays," she said. When the officers told me what they were doing, I was absolutely elated. Officers Woods and Zattler are awesome and they always come to our rescue.

Sharing a Meal Over Holidays By Ron Fanfair Toronto Police West Hill Neighbourhood Community Officers teamed up with Humaniti to provide a hot lunch to Danzig Community residents and Christmas toys to young children on December 23.... Officers from 43 Division donated the gifts. We had a surplus from our annual Toy Drive organized by our Auxiliary members, said S/Sgt. Nicholas Nei. The community was extremely generous this year and they should be commended for that. This is a tough time for many people and we wanted to cheer them up at this time of year, particularly the children. Humaniti, a grassroots Canadian relief and development organization with global impact, organized the meals. We have a project call ‘Share A Meal’ and, for the holiday season, we have encouraged restaurants and donors across the city to share a meal for the holidays, said Humaniti’s Executive Director Firaaz Azzez who was the Special Projects Manager with the Muslim Welfare Centre for seven years. We are thrilled today to be able to work with Affys Premium Grill in Pickering. The executive chef prepared grilled chicken with rice and potatoes. Chantal Hennigar took her two children, ages eight and six, to the event. One of the Neighbourhood officers gave them a flyer advertising it, so they were very enthused, she said. I have lived in this community for three years and the police are very engaged. It’s good to have them here at this time of year celebrating the season with us in a meaningful way. Seven-year-old Dominic Bartley was excited to attend the event. I feel joy, he said. I am so happy. The boy and his father, Lamar Bartley, have resided in the community for four years. This is a good thing for the community, especially with what is going on right now in the world, he said. In fact, this is one of the best things that the police have done here in my time. Mother and daughter Lynette and Monica Gittens have lived in the community for nearly 20 years. They helped to co-ordinate the event. The children are very happy to receive the gifts and they are already asking if we are going to do it again, said Monica Gittens. This is such a nice way to bring the community together and have them interact with police. Const. Rich Bronilla is one of the neighbourhood officers who spend quality time in the Danzig community. This is a good community with a lot of people doing great stuff, he said. They are welcoming to us and they run positive programs for young people. We are very happy to be part of this event today. Supt. Dave Rydzik, the 43 Division Unit Commander, was on hand to interact with the community and wish them happy holidays.

Delivering Christmas to Kids Away from Home By Ron Fanfair Three children who had to be separated from their mother this Christmas received gifts from the police officers and firefighters who responded to the call for help.... Consts. Paul Ramos and Kurt Bassett were the first officers on the scene of the unknown trouble call in early November. They observed a female who was in a mental health crisis and there were three children in the apartment with her, said Sgt. James Makhlouf. Consts. Paul Rowe and Doug Clarkson were able to ascertain that the children were okay but had concerns and called in the Emergency Task Force for support. After they showed up, we tried to start a dialogue with the mom, but it became quite clear that was going to be very difficult, said Makhlouf. We were hearing a lot of commotion in the building and with us losing sight of the smaller children, our concerns were elevated. We didn’t know if the children were safe and we had to take action. The door was breached and the mother was apprehended under the Mental Health Act and taken to a local hospital. The children were turned over to the care of the Children’s Aid Society and placed into foster care. Makhlouf said all of the attending officers were affected by the incident because of the risk to the children. I have been doing this for 18 years and I can honestly say this is probably the first time I have taken a step back, he said. I was so impressed with the way that eldest son acted. He was very calm. Const. Rowe remained in contact with the foster parent At the end of the radio call, we took a step back, he said. We saw these kids and remember the two young ones looking so scared, even though they were in the arms of firefighters. We have kids and knew we had to do something. The A-platoon members held fundraisers and used their own money to buy Christmas presents for the three children. Some of our platoon members also brought books and clothes that we will give to them, said Const. Ramos. The Toronto Fire Service members, who attended the scene, also raised money that was used to purchase Christmas gifts for the children.

Service Helps Santa's Show Go On By Ron Fanfair Because of the pandemic and crowd restrictions, this year’s Santa Claus Parade is going to be different.... But the Toronto Police Service played an integral part in the staging of this event and on November 17, Traffic Services escorted the floats from Santa’s workshop to a secret location for filming. There were 22 floats towed by 22 vehicles plus 6 support vehicles. It takes highly trained and dedicated officers to help Santa in a mission like this, said Sgt. Jason Kraft, of Traffic Services. To celebrate the parade, Traffic Services asked TPS members about their memories from previous parades through the streets of Toronto that draw thousands of spectators each year. I have worked at many of those parades, said Const Jenelle Higo of Traffic Services. I was always riding a motorcycle and I was always freezing, but we would do anything to make sure Santa Claus comes to town. My favourite part was Santa Claus and the hot chocolate with the little marshmallows inside. The majority of Toronto Police personnel that work on the parade day are Auxiliary members. These are volunteers who go out and have a great time, said Const. Sean Shapiro, who was an Auxiliary member for 12 years before becoming a uniformed officer. I looked forward to that event and I knew where I was going to be every year. Parking Enforcement Officer (PEO) Erin Urquhart has great memories of the parade as a child and PEO. Working Santa Claus parades is very different from when I was a kid attending them, she said. Seeing the kids super excited is really magical and a joyous moment. Acting Auxiliary S/Sgt. Mike Liebman, of 32 Division, has missed just two parades in his 20-year career with the Service. It is one of the most uplifting events with families representing every culture enjoying that special occasion, he added. The positive energy that goes on at this event is something that carries some people through the entire year. It’s also a nice opportunity to reconnect with Service members you don’t otherwise see regularly during the year. Bryce Levert, of Traffic Services Motor Squad, said his favourite Santa Claus memory was three years ago. My daughter was nine years old and I told her I was going to surprise her, he recalled. She was all excited and wanted to know what the surprise was. While on Bloor St. trying to get pictures of the floats, Santa Claus appeared. Before he left, I asked him for a favour and he said he would do anything for a Toronto Police officer. I told him my daughter was just expecting a photo of him on the sleigh, but I asked him if he could send her a message which he did after I gave my camera to a colleague. The parade will air on Saturday, December 5 from 5pm. to 7 pm. on CTV and CTV2.

Handgun Seized After Traffic Stop By Ron Fanfair Officers recovered a loaded handgun after making a traffic stop in the Gosford Blvd. and Milo Park Gate on Nov. 27.... It’s alleged that the driver, who fled on foot after he was stopped, was arrested after a brief pursuit and a loaded 9mm semi-automatic handgun was recovered. Noah Idemudia, 21, of Toronto, faces nine charges, including possession of a restricted and loaded firearm. He made a court appearance later that day. There’s lots of issues that our officers are facing, but they are still engaged in enforcement and out there looking for firearms and suspects who are carrying them, said Supt. Ron Taverner. In this particular case, the officers were very diligent, engaged and they used the proper policing techniques to make the arrest. LGBTQ-ISN Helps First Responder Wellness A First Responders’ Pride Party focused their fundraising on helping colleagues mental wellness. On Saturday September 26, members of the LGBTQ-ISN met at the front of 51 Division to present a cheque for $10,000 to Toronto Beyond the Blue (TBTB) a volunteer organization that supports police families. ... The funds come in part from the annual First Responder’s Pride Party, organized by the LGBTQ-ISN, and supported last year by the Toronto Professional Firefighter’s Association, Toronto Police Association, Toronto Paramedic’s Association, and Toronto Senior Officer’s Organization. Constable Robert Chevalier, the LGBTQ-ISN Co-Chair said the money raised through their annual event is usually donated to local LGBTQ2S charities but this year the team wanted to reach out to charities that help First Responders. This represents the last of $20,000 in checks handed out by us to support three agencies focused on the mental health of First Responders, the other two being I’veGotYourBack911 and Wounded Warriors, Chevalier said. Superintendent Moreira of 51 Division said TBTB is a very personal charity for 51 Division members. It was a particular honour to do this presentation to Dilnaz Garda, on behalf of Toronto Beyond the Blue, here at 51 Division. We all carry with us the memories of our fallen brother Constable Darius Garda, and we appreciate the hard work done by Dilnaz to promote the good mental health of Toronto police officers, Moreira said. Darius Garda died by suicide in 2016 as he was dealing with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and other mental health issues. The LGBTQ-ISN also presented a check for $1,000 to retired Const. Patty Retsinas on behalf of Coming Out Cops, a documentary about the lives of LGBTQ2S police officers, currently in production. The LGBTQ-ISN thanks everyone who sponsored and participated in their events in 2019-2020 and looks forward to the end of COVID-19 when we can meet, celebrate, and raise funds for our communities once again, said Chevalier.

Two Arrests in Boy’s Shooting Chief James Ramer announced the arrests of two men in relation to a weekend shooting in 31 Division that left a 12-year-old bystander life-threatening condition. Chief Jim Ramer speaks about two arrests in the shooting of a 12-year-old boy... It is alleged that suspects exited a vehicle and began shooting at another vehicle on Saturday, November 7, 2020, at approximately 2:20 p.m., in the Jane Street and Stong Court area. There were four victims including a 12-year-old boy who was walking in the area at the time with his mother. On Monday, November 9, close to 5 p.m. an Integrated Gun and Gang Task Force Centralized Shooting Response Team arrested Rashawn Chambers, 24, of Toronto, and Jahwayne Smart, 25, of no fixed address, in the Bay Street and Dundas Street West area as they exited a store. It is further alleged that three loaded firearms were recovered. Both men face 28 charges including six counts of attempt murder and firearm possession. We believe these two alleged shooters may have been involved in a separate shooting incident last week - which also endangered the lives of many innocent people and that remains an active investigation, said Ramer, of a shooting on November 4 in the same area on Driftwood Ave. The Chief also alleged the same offenders are believed to be involved in a shooting in Bradford. I want to underline that gun violence and gang activity will not be tolerated. We will put every effort to bring these types of individuals to justice. These types of significant events impact the safety of our neighbourhoods, particularly, this callous and reckless act that occurred on Saturday afternoon, endangering so many lives, Chief Ramer said. The Chief visited the area with Mayor John Tory on the weekend to speak with residents. The Toronto Police Service is committed to taking all action to work with our communities and government partners to stop gun violence and disrupt the gang activity that threatens our neighbourhoods. Chief Ramer speaks to the media about the arrest of two men in connection with the shooting of a 12-year-old boy Ramer thanked officers for their investigation leading to the arrests. I would like to commend all of the officers involved, for their excellent work and diligence in making these arrests safely, and without further incident. Record Fundraiser for Dementia Support To mark World Alzheimer’s Day on September 21, Toronto Police Communications members have been fundraising to support the Alzheimer Society of Toronto (AST). This year, they raised a record $10,000. ... For the last 14 years, Communications have held a ‘Coffee Break’ program to raise funds for AST that provides support, information, programs and education to people with dementia, their families and their caregivers. Due to COVID-19 restrictions in place, the amazing unit came together to prove once again just how important they are to the Toronto Police Service and also the community, said Sherri MacIver. Past, present and retired Communications members as well as the Toronto Police Association and the Senior Officers Organization demonstrated much kindness and generosity to help us raise this record sum in just over a week. In response to a growing number of missing elderlies calls, Communications Operators Elizabeth Murphy and Donna Remy, who retired in 2018, started the annual fundraiser in 2006. Deputy Chief Peter Yuen joined S/Supt. Randy Carter and Supt. Hugh Ferguson made the raffle draw which was part of the fundraiser. Yuen praised the Communication team for supporting AST. Mental health and mental health awareness is each and everyone’s responsibility, he said. Not only are they looking after themselves but they are taking the time to look after others that are in need. I want to thank them for doing what they do each and every day.

Taxi Company Helps Missing Man Get Home A Beck taxi driver and three other Beck employees were recognized with Toronto Police Certificates of Appreciation for helping to reunite a missing senior with family members. On Saturday October 17 at around 12.06 p.m., an 85-year-old man boarded a TTC southbound bus in the Markham Rd. and Markanna Drive area.... When he didn’t return home, family members became concerned and contacted Toronto Police. As the man’s son was canvassing the area near Warden Subway station, a TTC operator notified him that he had seen a man fitting the description of his elderly father jumping into a Beck Taxi. The man’s granddaughter contacted the taxi service. I took the phone call from her and then reported back to our team leader Sarah Sheahan who searched for the driver who might have been in the area at the time, said Shane Ott, who is a customer service representative. Dispatcher Kimberlee Martin reached out to the driver who had good news for her. I called the driver immediately and asked if he had a man named ‘Harry’ in his car and he said ‘yes, I do’, said Martin. I also asked him if the man was wearing a straw hat and he said, ‘yes’. I told the driver to stay where he was and I am contacting the police right away. Driver Yassir Muhammad Ladah said the man, who he picked up near Warden Subway Station, was in his taxi for almost 90 minutes. At first, he told me he was living close to Kennedy Station and when I got there, he then said he lived at 16 McCowan Rd, the taxi operator recounted. I went there and realized he didn’t live there, so I drove him to 41 Division. It was then that Ladah got in contact with Beck and realized he had a missing man in his car. They said I should remain where I was, said the driver, who waited for officers to arrive. Supt. Dave Rydzik presented the certificates to the Beck employees Kimberlee Martin, Sarah Sheahan, Shane Ott and Yassir Muhammad Ladah on October 27 at 43 Division for their teamwork in getting the missing man home. We want people to get involved without putting their lives in jeopardy, he said. It’s about doing the right thing to keep your community safe and, in this case, we are thankful that this man got home safely and in a timely fashion. The Unit Commander said the Service takes missing persons cases very seriously We have got procedures that dictate our levels of search, he added. With a missing elderly like that who is a little bit confused and might have dementia and things like that, we immediately go to a Level 2 search which means we send resources up to the address and do a search in and around there. This was going to Level 3 which meant we were going to bring resources in from all over the city.
