I found a decent guide to beginner cross-country skiing on YouTube. This is not intended as a replacement for lessons. It's more of an introductory so "when you... take lessons" (and you should if you're new to cross-country skiing) you will have a reasonable concept as you progress. Taking lessons gives you hands on instruction, avoids misinterpretation and important feedback from the instructor. In this video it doesn't dwell on etiquette just technique. Please familiarize yourself with cross-country skiing etiquette even if you have been skiing for years. For instance, I have seen all too frequently where skiers refuse to step out of an uphill track to herring bone up the slope. This destroys the track for those who are capable of achieving the incline. Same for when you are on a decline. Where going down an decline, step out of the track set to herring bone to cut your speed. It shows another technique for a single herring bone, but that is an advanced move. I'm aware there are trails where this may not be possible. I'm speaking to the areas where this is totally avoidable. In summary if you took lessons you wouldn't be "one of those skiers" that I'm alluding to! In the meantime get out and ski when you can and thank the volunteers who made these trails possible for you. Please practice social distancing and other covid protocols. Stay healthy! See more
