Demystifying common AC issues 2) Improperly Sized Systems When it comes to air conditioners and heat-pumps, bigger is not necessarily better. Actually, an oversized air conditioner will continuously cycle on and off, leading to inefficient power usage and uncomfortable temperature fluctuations. Of course, an undersized air conditioner is just as problematic; without sufficient cooling capacity, your unit will wear itself out quickly and fail to keep your home or office comfor...table. Either case is a guaranteed ticket to a costly AC repair down the road. If you need a new air conditioner, make sure your contractor does a proper load calculation to determine exactly how much cooling capacity the individual spaces in your home require. By considering square footage, layout, orientation, insulation and load-generating appliances into account, your HVAC professional can find your home’s cooling load and recommend a system that is accurately sized to meet that cooling need. #tosot #ductlesssplits #ultraheat #efficiency #inverter #comfort

Demystifying Common AC Issues 1) Obstructing the Outdoor unit A very critical exchange takes place at your outdoor unit. The fan and coil must be able to efficiently discharge or absorb heat from the surrounding air. In order to do this, the unit must be able to breathe. First of all, mount the unit according to the clearances found in the installation manual. Make sure not to place anything immediately in front of, or behind, the outdoor unit. Finally, be sure to keep any plants or vegetation trimmed back, so it doesn’t restrict airflow or damage the unit.

Ancient civilization is the treasure of mysteries, innovations and inventions. Ancient Egyptians pioneered the use of evaporative cooling by hanging wet cloth in doorways and windows. As wind blew across the wet cloths, the air that enters the home is cooled. This action cool downs the brickwork of the buildings. Egyptians took advantage of Northern winds. They made wind vanes and air conditioners by diverting the wind downwards and combined with the soaked tarp. Roman empero...r Elagabalus stepped up his empire’s AC game. He built an entire mountain of snow! By employing vast squadrons of donkey trains to move snow from mountains into the garden next to his villa. This was the most inefficient air conditioner. However, this mentality foreshadowed the relentless efforts to develop efficient methods of indoor cooling systems. In the middle east, the earliest settlers, had a problem. The insides of their homes would become swelteringly hot and the shelf life of perishable goods was short. The windcatcher tower was invented. Fed down in to courtyards it acts as a ventilation and heat management system. A capped tower with an open side facing the wind brings down cooling drafts in to the heart of the structure below. As the air moves it increases an evaporative cooling effect.

To some, mini-split heat pumps are the perfect solution, particularly in retrofit applications. To others, they are an unsightly bother, spoiling an otherwise perfect aesthetic, both inside and outside the home. One such example of the latter was this home: a charming two bedroom, 1.5 story bungalow with a wide front porch, an extended basement foundation at the rear, and a driveway to one side. This home had no air conditioning, and was heated by oil fired hot water basebo...ards. The cast iron boiler was over 40 years old, and had a damaged combustion chamber. Wall-mounted mini-Splits would be the common-sense solution, but with limited options for mounting the outdoor unit and limited attic space, this would mean running line sets all the way around the outside of the house to each room, creating a spider web around the house. Unsightly and expensive! The TOSOT solution? Concealed slim duct indoor units. One thing this home had, in abundance, was basement space under both levels of the house. This allowed us to mount two slim duct units below the floor, one under each level of the home. Supply registers were placed in the floors near exterior walls, along with a central return for each unit with an easily accessible filter grille. As an added bonus, since each indoor unit served a different level of the house, the system had built-in zoning. No dampers needed! Simple installation, invisible indoor units, and the look and feel of a central heating and cooling system without the hassle of traditional ductwork and bulky air handlers. Paired with one of our Ultra Heat Multi-Zone outdoor units, maybe the TOSOT slim duct is the perfect solution for your customer!

Furnaces, boilers, and other heating equipment constitute one of Canada’s largest sources of carbon pollution. In fact, the burning of fossil fuels in homes and buildings mostly natural gas and heating oil accounts for around 12% of Canada’s greenhouse gas emissions. Fortunately, affordable and proven solutions already exist one of the most promising being the electrification of heating. Electric heating technologies have been around for a long time, and in some parts o...f Canada electric baseboard heaters are common. However, these technologies are also inefficient and therefore expensive to run. Heat pumps are the most promising alternative to fossil fuel heating. They have been around for decades, but have only recently been perfected for use in cold climates like Canada’s. Much more efficient than electric resistance heaters, modern heat pumps deliver heat instantly and operate quietly. Heat pumps provide efficient cooling as well as heating. As our homes become more efficient, with greater levels of insulation and airtightness, the risk of summer overheating increases, making the air conditioning abilities of heat pumps very interesting.

Our VP of Finance, Mathieu Gagnon, recently had this 3 Ton APEX cold climate heat pump installed in his Montreal duplex. This quiet condensing unit was paired up with the existing air handler that was already installed in the basement. The versatility of Tosot’s APEX system allows it to operate efficiently with any third-party air handler. This type of installation saves time, money, and also extends the service life of a good air handler that would have otherwise been discar...ded in a typical system replacement. The quiet and compact side discharge design allowed Mathieu to relocate the outdoor unit to the side of the duplex to re-claim some space in his backyard. This would have been impossible with the typical (much larger, and much louder) top discharge condensing unit. Mathieu saved his electricity bills from last winter, and we are eager to see his savings year over year. Did you know that 60% of the average Canadian home energy consumption is dedicated to space heating? This heat pump gives 100% heating capacity at -20C and nearly 80% at -30C, heating your home far more efficiently than baseboards or fossil fuel systems, which also cannot cool your home during a heat wave. #APEX #Tosot #CentralHeatPump #ColdClimateHeatPump #UltraHeat #HeatWave

The First Heat Wave is Here, Here is What You Should Know about SEER The efficiency in cooling mode of central and ductless heat pump systems is rated by a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER). In general, the higher the SEER, the less electricity the system needs to do its job. SEER is a mathematically determined ratio of the total cooling capacity during normal periods of operation (not to exceed 12 months) divided by the total electric energy input during the same time ...period. More detail on the SEER calculation can be obtained in AHRI Standard 210/240-2008 Great strides have been made in the last 10 years to increase the efficiency of new air conditioners and heat pumps. SEER ratings for air conditioning and air-source heat pump systems manufactured today range from 13 SEER to 38 SEER, with the highest numbers indicating the most efficient units that offer the most energy savings year after year.

How Do Heat Pumps Work? While most heating systems burn fossil fuel or utilize electric resistance elements, a heat pump actually moves existing heat from one place to another. In the case of an air-source heat pump, heat is collected from the outdoor air, concentrated via a compressor, and distributed inside through an indoor blower. Heat pumps require electricity to run but can deliver more heat energy than they consume because they are concentrating and moving heat, rathe...r than generating it directly. The added benefit: In summer, a heat pump’s operation is reversed to cool your home or office by moving heat from indoors to outdoors.
