This article is a an important read to any community hockey fan. The end game of this is gloomy for community hockey. Last year GVMHA only had one rep team in each of Bantam and Midget. A direct result of the expansion of Prep schools and the Zone programs. Vernon could soon host zero Rep teams based on the expansion BC Hockey is proposing. The theory is that better competition yields better players. Perhaps. But fewer families and players will enrol now because projected R...ep costs are clearly going to sky-rocket. This won't yield more or better players in towns like Vernon. I firmly believe it will limit access and further reduce interest in hockey as the chosen youth sport for families. Somehow hockey leaders seem to have lost sight of all of the benefits of community based Rep hockey. It isn't just about better dangles or the next Conner McDavid. It is also about helping to build better citizens through competitive sport. This matters. Prep schools are here to stay. But if Associations and BC Hockey don't truly work together to re-egineeer grassroots development models and keep value equations strong, they will end up shooting each other in the foot. This will drive up prep school enrolment even faster. To my mind BC Hockey should be in the association development and strengthening business, not running multiple leagues. To many employees required for this. This costs even more money. MML has been losing players to the Prep Schools three midget leagues for sveral years now. MML quality level has dropped accordingly and the solution is not to add more BC Hockey leagues via E15 and Zone 1 and 2?? Just waters things down even more. Based on what I have see thus far I am not impressed with the Zone pilot. The hockey was fine. Disorganization issues aside, the spiked cost for what was brought to the table doesn't add up for me relative to proper Rep hockey in Vernon. I absolutely vote bringing Tier 2 - Tier 4 back to the associations and then collectively sitting down with BC Hockey and OMAHA and making sure the associations are being resourced on todays development needs. That is not happening today.

This is a great piece. Do you stop and think about processed food before you put it in your mouth? Why does it really exist? Is it to use up a by-product of other food processing? Is it more efficient or cheaper to produce? Does it have a longer shelf life? Does it ring the bell with super busy consumers for impulse purchases? Says "Healthy" on the pack, so it must be right??? Toss it in the microwave and we are good to go. ... Maybe not. Thinking that profit driven organizations are ever truly about your health is naive. They are more about having you simply believe it is healthy enough to eat. You need to be in charge of what is healthy. Get yourself up to speed. It isnt hard. If we stop buying crap, they will stop making it. Don't wait for government or legistation to fix it. That too is naive. Won't ever happen. I am certified by Precision Nutrition and work hard to make sure we eat well, but I certainly don't eat perfectly clean yet. I just can't seem to shake the monthly night out for chicken wings and a beer. However, we just watched "What The Health" on Netflix and that REALLY grabbed my attention. Give it 90 minutes of your time. It will further change your mind about a few things I am sure. Even if you divide by two, to factor out any of the films bias, it is still quite scary. Take action and support the farmers market and our local producers !! Yes they make a profit too, and they should, but they have it way more right than the major food corporations. As well, ask your local retailer to carry more local products. Demand creates supply.

Way to go Jenna !!! Hard work, dedication and perserverence are paying off.

As a performace coach it is not supposed to be about me. It is about my athletes. So with pehaps an absence of humility I share that I posted two PB's out of 4 goals in the last 24 hours. I had set some goals and a new progression plan for myself back in March for my 57th Birthday yesterday. Result - I hit 3 of the 4 goals. The first two were PB's; Deadlift 425 and Bench 235. I did miss my squat goal (3rd goal) by 10. But I will have that next year !!!! Most important was the 4th goal of no pain or physio tape !!! I do not share the view that these are badges of honor like calouses might be. Busted up or over reached muscles, ligaments, tendons and joints just plain hurt. Pain free strength and movement gains are all I want at my age. Lift smart, lift consistent, be patient and keep moving the bar !!

Great story !! This young lady is living proof of three things. 1) Don't set limits 2) Don't judge a book by its cover and 3) Being an ATHLETE can help you be better at any other sport, even if you start later. She was a gymnast before getting into elite level Olympic lifting. No doubt this translates to better power generation and quicker technical proficiency adoption for lifting. Be PATIENT in your development. Play OTHER sports. Oh yea and lift too !!! Unless your sport is darts or chess, being stronger and faster is always part of being a better athlete.

Great to see the two training partners walk away with the banner. Well done Zac and JJ !!

"She is just a girl, let her play with dolls......." Time to lose that Old School Thinking !! Physical Literacy Canada teaches that the biggest obsticale to a young girls athletic developent is most often exclusion by boys, coaches and parents, and NOT lack of ability.

A great article on why one would ever hire a strength coach with everything available on the web for free nowadays. Just Google it right? Not so fast. You will note that this study is done on a fitness aware population of adults and the results are compelling. In my years of training aspiring athletes, I know with absolute certainty that the MOV numbers would skew even higher with a similar sample size group of gym-inexperienced teens.

Great to have Max back in the gym !! Also a little trivia for the next EA Sports NHL18 video game. Max and some fellow Dinos will be included. Now we can say the kid cracked the NHL !! ; )

Just completed my PN1 Certification in Exercise Nutrition !! Precision Nutrition is an excellent organization. Chewing through the 630 page text, online video tutorials, study guides and section tests was candidly a little more than I expected. I am now very excited to integrate some of this updated nutritional learning and strategy to our S&C clients. Stay tuned. More to come !!

Great article !!! It is so easy for young athletes and parents to get dazzled by the "city lights" of novel exercises, cool equipment or even impressive feats of strength by the trainer. these all have there place, but if you are inexperienced can possibly lead you down the wrong path. LTAD (long term athletic development) is the best and wisest path....PERIOD. Each stage of LTAD serves a purpose. Skipping steps is just that, skipping steps. Most times this false acceleration plan is anchored in a panicked effort to make up for perceived lost ground. Your plan should be your plan based on where you are right now and no one else's. Be honest and objective with yourself. Get assessed by a reliable trainer and start your training journey from there.

Bang on Gareth !!! Amazing how many of todays workout mantras spout words like "Crushed it" or "Torched Fat" or ". No wonder so many folks avoid gyms like the plague. Just get moving and then layer in some age/ability level exercises and one will feel much better VERY SOON.

Total Approach 01.09.2020

She did it !!! Gia just received word that she passed all of her final Board exam requirements for the College of Massage Therapists of British Columbia. An amazing accomplishment.....I am so proud of her.

Kudos to Jagger for a strong start this season !! 1.25 pts per game so far. Early days, but a great start for your new role wearing the "A". You are clearly showing you worked hard for it and you deserve it !!

Simply to wish all my TASC athletes, vying for teams in GVMHA rep hockey, best of luck this week. I know many of you are awaiting final news on team rosters. These are a tough few weeks !!! Keep your "eyes on the prize" and work extra hard at your practices and games. I look to catch most of you play this weekend. See you at the rinks !!

I just Googled "in-season training for hockey" Only got "About 3,390,000 results (0.43 seconds)" I should have those all read and disseminated into a clear plan by the year 3011. Actually the trick with in-season planning is easy. ... 1) Do something !!!! Don't wait until spring 2) Have a focus. What is the primary goal of your training ? Just work on that for starters !! 3) Be reasonable. What can you realistically add to your busy schedule? Just do that and evaluate what happens !! Okay so there are a few more details. But essentially that is the thought process.

Total Approach 04.07.2020

This is a great article that uses research and not outdated myths to help you make appropriate decisions for youth strength training as a portion of your child's overall LTAD (Long Term Athletic Development) plan. It is astonishing to me that these myths still exist in todays information age, but they do. We all now agree the earth isn't flat, but somehow this myth of about young athletes "must not lift weights" still wanders into conversation. I just bite my lip. Do take not...e of the comments encouraging competent supervision and instruction. Sending young inexperienced kids to large group sessions or worse on their own to the gym with a piece of paper carries an increase risk. So whether you lead this yourself or hire someone, we all know young athletes have short attention spans and are easily distracted. Learning to stay focussed on the task at hand is a key part of injury prevention in any activity, not just strength training.
