This home underwent a façade transformation with CertainTeed Landmark PRO "Prairie Wood" shingles to finish it off. Our customer was nervous as this was a newly introduced colour this year and the first installation in Ontario. They made a great choice!

Roofing Season has Begun! We are looking forward to another fun and exciting year. We have already met many new and wonderful customers for this year. A common theme we're seeing this year is shingles found on the ground prompting a call for a free estimate. If you're picking up shingle fragments on the ground then we're likely seeing this on your rooftop, no underlayment and bare plywood between the shingle seams allowing direct access for water into you home. Once the shingles lose their sealing and structural integrity, you become susceptible to significant damage in a major weather event. Don't wait too long if you're in this situation and call us for your free estimate!

CertainTeed Landmark "Cottage Red" shingles can create a stunning look and dramatic contrast with surrounding green spaces. One of our big projects for a private school last year utilized cottage red shingles - we were quite pleased with the result.

We've seen several roofs in the area that have experienced "isolated pattern wear" or wear to the shingles that is inconsistent across the roof surface. There are several possible reasons for shingle deterioration but we are finding that this one factor has had a significant impact on rooftops. The result is accelerated wear and premature shingle failure reducing the lifespan of the shingles by several years. Look at the pictures and take a guess as to what we hypothesize is the major contribution to this damage. We'll let you know our thoughts with a follow up post.

We took on a new employee this Spring. He just happened to walk on site this morning. We got rid of him the same day in the afternoon. Everything about him stank. He had a stinky attitude, stinky workmanship and he was a stinky communicator. He never spoke and had a funny way of expressing himself when angry. He just hid behind the dumpster all day long as if we wouldn't notice. We were glad to see him go. Au Revoir Pepe Le Pew!

With this past wind storm, there was a lot of evidence of roof damage on the ground and on rooftops. In one parking lot I came across a full shingle on the ground. I couldn't resist picking it up and bringing it home to investigate how an entire modern laminate shingle came off a rooftop. If you want to know more about the findings, click on the pictures.

This is a very unique project for us this year. We were extremely excited when we were selected to install "Authentic Roof" on a prestigious home in Grimsby. Authentic Roof is an Environmentally Friendly synthetic slate product made from high quality recycled polymers and is 100% recyclable! As a second layer of defense we provide our customers with a roof deck that is covered with a synthetic covering over the wooden sheathing. Grace SYN 15 is an engineered woven fabric, coated on both sides with polypropylene. This covering acts as a secondary water shedding material below the shingles and is essential in all of our roofing system installations.

To protect these vulnerable areas we add a layer of Ice and Water shield directly to the roofing deck. The ice and water shield is a composite material of asphalt polymers, formed into a rolled sheet. The asphalt makes it vapor-tight, and the polymers make the asphalt elastic and sticky. This protective barrier is able to stretch and seal around nails driven through it and acts as our first layer of defense in our roofing system that we provide to our customers.

As we tear off the original shingles, we can see that there are certain areas of a roof that are vulnerable to the harsh effects of wind, water and ice. One of those areas is shown here just above the eaves. Within a few feet of the eaves is where ice dams and water damage are likely to occur. Other vulnerable areas include the roof valleys, around chimneys, skylights and other protrusions through the roof.

Our current project. We find that the original shingles installed on homes from a subdivision developer are installed based on budget constraints. They are generally inferior to other products that are available on the market. When replacing these shingles, take advantage of the opportunity to install a quality roofing system and call Toth Brothers Roofing.

Repairing Roofs allows us to appreciate the importance of a properly installed roofing system, right down to where we place our nails in the shingle. Here we encountered shingles that were improperly nailed (nails were too high on the shingle at a weak point). Over time with high winds, the shingles were able to lift slightly causing what looks like a continuous hair line crack through several shingles. Eventual failure of the shingles is evident in the photos. We replaced the damaged shingles along with a section of the ridge cap.
