The boardwalk around Cobb's Pond Rotary Park is a great place to spend some time during the winter. Although it isn't cleared, the steps of many users (walkers, skiers and snowshoers for example) often make a compacted walking path. Have at look at some photos from January 24th on a beautiful sunny winter's day!

Every town needs a good mascot and we think our Commander Gander is the best. Originally hatched in 1987, Commander Gander has been "re-hatched" twice, in 1996 and in 2006. Here's a retro look at many of Commander Gander's fun activities over the years, including his introduction in 1987.

Barbara M Waters, a resident of Towson, Maryland (a few km’s north of Baltimore), decided this past spring that the Coronavirus was not going to stop her from getting some fresh air and exercising. Previously, she had read about Gander in Jim DeFede’s book The Day the World Came to Town. Though she could not visit Gander in person, she set an ambitious and unique goal for herself she would walk virtually to Gander. Her walking routine included walking around the town of... Towson and occasionally south all the way to Baltimore. On March 12 she commenced her journey. She accumulated miles every day she could, sometimes up to 10 miles per day. After 241 days, November 8, she virtually reached Gander, a walking distance of about 2,340 km (1,647 miles). Barbara informs us that she used the mileage from Google maps for driving instead of walking as the mileage for walking was often much less direct. Click on the image to enlarge a Google map of a log of her journey, showing a selection of some of the towns and cities that she virtually reached on the way to her ultimate goal of Gander. Barbara hopes to one day actually come to visit Gander. We trust that her real visit will be even more fulfilling than her exceptional virtual trek.

Cobb's Pond Rotary Park is one of the jewels in Gander, with it's 4km accessible boardwalk, play areas, concert stage and nature scenes. Sit back and enjoy this collage of scenes taken on a windy but beautiful day in late September. (1 min 4 seconds)
