More unfortunate vandalism in town along the waterfront. On Monday, staff arrived to work at Town Hall to discover that overnight Sunday, fencing around the proposed hotel area had been pulled over, and decorations for the Walk of Lights had been pulled down, broken to pieces or stolen. After fixing it up and continuing to decorate for this Friday’s turning on of the Walk of Lights, we came in to today to additional vandalism and theft. The section that will be used for Sa...nta on December 4th was spray painted in multiple areas (we are hoping to have time to paint it green again but may not be able to) including on some of the decorations, and strands of lights around the trunks of 2 trees were stolen (pictures are from today). As town staff continues to work towards preparing our waterfront for a beautiful display of lights, we would like to ask our citizens for their assistance in helping us keep it beautiful for everyone to enjoy. Thanks so much to all those who have been so generous with their compliments these past few days as we are getting it ready, and we hope everyone enjoys the lights beginning this Friday!

See http://town.ststephen.nb.ca/its-a-holly-jolly-hometown-chr/ for a downloadable copy, or pick up a copy at the main desk at Town Hall/Garcelon Civic Center! Walk of Lights. The Town will be lighting up the waterfront in front of the Garcelon Civic Center from 5pm November 20th to January 2nd, including our newly planted Community Christmas Tree (this event will be replacing the tree lighting ceremony in town square). These di...splays will be stationary and spread throughout the park and people are encouraged to walk through and enjoy them. Please email [email protected] if you would like to set up a display for this event (power will be supplied by the Town). Join us along the waterfront at 5pm on November 20th as we turn on our new Walk of Lights, then spend the evening downtown shopping and eating during Moonlight Madness! Reverse Parade and Santa’s Arrival. The Town will be holding a walking reverse parade leading to Santa’s Arrival that will be held on Friday, December 4th, 2020 from 6-8pm. The walk will start on the trail behind Scoops, continue along the trail towards the wharf, and along the waterfront to the last gazebo, where Santa, Mrs. Claus, MOE the Elf and his pal Reindeer will be in a living, outdoor toy workshop. Get pictures with Santa while maintaining social distancing, and children of all ages will get to see Santa making toys! These displays do not have to be traditional floats on trailers and may also consist of displays on the ground. These smaller displays are 1 night only. Please email [email protected] if you would like to sponsor a display/float for this event.

Mark it Read for Dyslexia 2020 Some people may have noticed that the new Town Hall portion of the Garcelon Civic Center has been lit up red recently. This has been in support of the third annual Mark it Read for Dyslexia Campaign and Mayor Allan MacEachern, the Town Councillors and all our Town Hall staff invite you to join us in recognition of this campaign. Dyslexia is a hereditary disability that makes it difficult to read, write or spell. In Canada, 1 in 5 children stru...ggle with dyslexia and in October, buildings across Canada have been lit up red in support of the 20% of our population who live with dyslexia. (https://www.dyslexiacanada.org/mark-it-read-2020) Let's show some love in #canadaschocolatetown and light it up red!

Terry Fox was an inspiration to all Canadians and 40 years later his memory still lives on! This morning Mayor Allan MacEachern and local citizen Carol Baker, who spearheads local fundraising efforts for the Terry Fox Foundation, raised the flag in town square in honour of the Marathon of Hope set to take place this Sunday virtually across Canada. Carol will be fundraising around town this week and if you see her, be sure to say hi and show your support!

New Brunswick Human Rights Commission Mandatory masks in compliance with Human Rights Act For more information about the act or how the commission can assist, New Brunswickers can call 506-453-2301 or 1-888-471-2233 (toll-free in the province). They can also visit the commission’s website, send an email to [email protected], or contact their local MLA.... 27 October 2020 The following statement was issued today by Claire Roussel-Sullivan, chair of the New Brunswick Human Rights Commission: On Oct. 8, 2020, the Government of New Brunswick updated its mandatory order under the Emergency Measures Act to include a mandatory mask rule in public spaces as a means to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Although the New Brunswick Human Rights Commission recognizes that mask wearing has been proven as an important public health measure to reduce the spread of COVID-19, as part of its mandate it has reviewed the measure as drafted and finds it reasonable and balanced in light of the public health goal and urgency. In particular, we are pleased to see that the mandatory order applies the principles of the duty to accommodate under the act by accommodating individuals who are not able to wear a mask due to age, mental disability, or physical disability. The commission encourages individuals who are exempt from wearing a mask, due to health or other protected grounds, to communicate with service providers, employers and landlords to find the appropriate accommodation. Businesses are urged to seek alternative ways to offer their services and individuals who are exempt from mask wearing, are required to accept reasonable accommodation while also paying special attention to physical distancing, frequent hand washing, and avoid, as much as possible, crowded places. Over the past weeks, the commission has received numerous requests for information regarding masks, and is pleased that various government agencies and departments, employers and service providers have reached out to ensure they are properly applying the mandatory order and accommodations pursuant to the act. For more information about the act or how the commission can assist, New Brunswickers can call 506-453-2301 or 1-888-471-2233 (toll-free in the province). They can also visit the commission’s website or send an email to [email protected].
