**Cut in Services at our Clinic** Yesterday, I heard a rumour we would lose one day a week of physician services at our clinic here in St. Mary’s. After numerous phone calls, and emails it was confirmed today the rumour was true. Todd, Sheila and myself sit on the health board for this region, we were not informed about this decision. I was in contact with our MHA, she was also unaware of the decision. She’s been working endlessly today to get us our needed answers. If there’s any cut in our medical services at the clinic, we’re planning on taking further action. We will need support of the community for this endeavour. Stay tuned early next week for an update. - Steve Ryan

INFO ABOUT CLOTHES DRYERS - The heating unit went out on my dryer! The gentleman that fixes things around the house for us told us that he wanted to show us something and he went over to the dryer and pulled out the lint filter. It was clean. (I always clean the lint from the filter after every load clothes.) He told us that he wanted to show us something; he took the filter over to the sink and ran hot water over it. The lint filter is made of a mesh material. I'm sure you k...now what your dryer's lint filter looks like. Well...the hot water just sat on top of the mesh! It didn't go through it at all! He told us that dryer sheets cause a film over that mesh and that's what burns out the heating unit. You can't SEE the film, but it's there. It's what is in the dryer sheets to make your clothes soft and static free. That nice fragrance too. You know how they can feel waxy when you take them out of the box...well this stuff builds up on your clothes and on your lint screen. This is also what causes dryer units to potentially burn your house down with it! He said the best way to keep your dryer working for a very longtime (and to keep your electric bill lower) is to take that filter out and wash it with hot soapy water and an old toothbrush (or other brush) at least every six months. He said that makes the life of the dryer at least twice as long! How about that!?! Learn something new every day! I certainly didn't know dryer sheets would do that. So, I thought I'd share! Note: I went to my dryer and tested my screen by running water on it. The water ran through a little bit but mostly collected all the water in the mesh screen. I washed it with warm soapy water and a nylon brush and I had it done in 30 seconds. Then when I rinsed it, the water ran right thru the screen! There wasn't any puddling at all! That repairman knew what he was talking about! See more

St. Marys Bay Cell Phone Service - Update - Awaiting Delivery We received a quick update from our friends at Bell Aliant. I'm told the project is still on track to have cell phone service in our area this summer (before September). We are currently waiting for the equipment to arrive here for the installation to begin. Other projects similar to ours are facing similar shipping issues. ... When the installation team is on the ground, I'll post here again on what the install and startup might look like. Thank you again for your continued patience. We knew this was going to be a long road, but where we will arrive as a place will surely be worth the wait. Stay safe

UPDATE ON CULVERT REPLACEMENT ON TCH AND TRAFFIC CONCERNS: I wish to advise the motoring public & residents of Holyrood that a discussion took place last night ...with the Minister of Transportation regarding the culvert replacement on the TCH and the traffic issues/concerns associated with this construction. Subsequent to that discussion, another meeting will be taking place early this morning with officials from the Dept of Transportation with the intent of finding ways of improving the traffic congestion throughout the town. While we fully understand everyones frustration, it has to be acknowledged that this work is absolutely necessary to ensure the safety of the motoring public. Lets be mindful what the dire consequences would be if the culvert on TCH collapsed with such high volume of traffic traversing that highway every day. In response to this update, we certainly welcome any ideas/suggestions you may have to improve the flow of traffic so it can be passed on to the Minister and his officials. I respectfully ask that you refrain from adding further complaints, as it does nothing to solve the issue. We certainly understand. We are focused on finding a solution. We will continue to keep everyone updated on progress. Thank-you all for your cooperation and patience. Please feel free to SHARE!

To anyone that is a student or knows a student that will be applying for the Canada Emergency Student Benefit please note that while grade 12 students who are persuing post secondary in the fall can apply for the benefit, they can't apply for the benefit until July. NL students are not considered finished their school year until the end of June. Those students can receive the benefit for July and August then - not from May to August. Wouldn't want students to receive funds and have to pay some of them back.

No campfires, no personal fireworks: N.L. puts bans in place until Sept. 30 - The minimum fine associated with the violation is $1,000. The government of Newfoundland and Labrador has banned all open fires in or near wooded areas until Sept. 30. The provincial government says the goal is to reduce the number of potential wildfires in the province, which would require response by fisheries and land resources fire staff, local and volunteer fire departments and other first r...esponders during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Historically, 80 per cent of forest fires in the province are caused by people," said the provincial government in a public advisory Wednesday. The ban specifically prohibits the setting of all open fires on forest land, or within 300 metres of forest land in all regions of the province. The ban also includes grass burning, brush burning, campfires and personal fireworks. The provincial government said gas barbecues and CSA-approved patio fire pits are excluded from the ban, except in municipalities that have issued their own ban. This is consistent with actions being taken by other forest fire fighting agencies in Canada to lower the risks associated with COVID-19 exposure," the advisory reads. "The minimum fine associated with the violation of the fire ban proclamation is $1,000. The Department of Fisheries and Land Resources has already recorded five wildfires this year related to the burning of grass by individuals."
