The Town of Gander would like to remind residents to stay off the ice on local ponds. We are experiencing milder than normal temperatures for this time of year and the ponds may not be safe for recreational use. We implore you to also speak to your children about this as we have witnessed children skating on Cobbs Pond this week. We would like all our residents to remain safe. Thank you.

35th Anniversary of the Gander Crash Request for Assistance in Documentary Production On December 12, 1985, a chartered DC 8 plane was returning from a Middle East Peace mission. After refuelling in Gander, this plane crashed shortly after takeoff from the airport. All persons onboard were killed on impact near Gander Lake which is now known as the Silent Witness Memorial. On board were 248 members of the 101st Airborne and 8 Arrow Air aircrew. Now a CBC documentary will t...ake an uplifting positive look at life after this crash through the eyes of Gold Star 101st Airborne families, Arrow Air crew families, Crash First Responders, and the residents of Gander. The documentary is expected to be shown on CBC Television during the Spring/Summer of 2021. Arrangements will be made so our American friends can also view this documentary. This documentary will be produced by veteran film maker Mr. Fabian James of St. John’s, NL. Fabian has asked Mr Smith to contact Gold Star 101st Airborne family members, Arrow Air crew family members, Crash First Responders and the residents of Gander, NL. to determine if they would be interested in participating in this documentary. If you wish to participate, please e mail Sergeant RJ (Bob) Smith (Retired) [email protected]. When you reply, please include your contact information (phone and email) so Mr. James may contact you.

A worthwhile read on the history of our wonderful town. The History of Gander as documented by Robert Pelley A former Ganderite, Robert Pelley has been conducting in-depth research on Old Gander. His project has been to list as many former residents of the old Town site as possible which area they lived in, the building number and street they lived on, as well as their employer and the names of their parents and children.... Robert Pelley’s research and website provides an interesting view of Gander’s history and the people who helped write it. 19 years ago today, nearly 6700 passengers and airline crew members arrived in Gander, following the closure of the U.S. airspace due to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Residents of Gander and surrounding communities opened their doors to the stranded passengers, dropping everything to host and comfort them until the airspace reopened. Strangers were invited into homes where meals and beds awaited them. Striking school bus drivers put down their picket signs and volunteered to ...transport people from their planes. Schools became shelters. Restaurants donated food and pharmacies provided everything from diapers to medication. That time together formed tight relationships between the residents and the passengers. The attacks killed 2977 people and injured over 6000 others. Additional people died of 9/11-related cancer and respiratory diseases in the months and years following the attacks. Today, our thoughts are with the families of the victims, the survivors and the first responders who risked their lives so bravely. Today, we remember the lives lost, the friendships made and the strength and kindness shown.
Mayor Farwell and Deputy Mayor Pollett safely spreading Christmas cheer to our medical facilities. Although this year has been a difficult one, we appreciate all health care workers and what they do to keep residents in the Town of Gander safe.

December 6, 1989 is a day forever remembered by Canadians. Today we honour the 14 women murdered during the Montreal Massacre at l’École Polytechnique. The Gand...er Women's Centre did what I like to call a "Community based Vigil" this year and delivered candles and framed information sheets to community organizations and businesses that were willing to display them on their front desks and entryways to show their support. Hopefully through awareness, we will be one step closer to eliminating violence against women. Please see some of our previous posts over the last week + ! See more
