UNITING THROUGH TRADITIONS: Haiti Holiday traditions in Haiti start in early December, when families cut pine branches or trees and decorate them with vibrant ornaments. The pine branches or trees are completed with a nativity scene at its base. ‘Fanals’ are a large part of Haitian Christmas traditions. In Haiti, many families decorate with Fanals, which are small lantern like homes made with tissue paper and when lit look like stained glass. In Haiti, Christmas Eve is a... time for celebrating with friends and family, these evening celebrations last into the early hours of Christmas morning! The Christmas Eve celebrations start with attending a late-night church service followed by family and friends gathering and tends to involve a feast called the ‘Reveillon’. The Reveillon typically features traditional food and drinks as well as singing or caroling. On Christmas Eve children place their freshly cleaned shoes filled with straw on the porch in hopes that Santa will take the straw and replace it with presents. The Town of Truro wishes to embrace all cultural and traditional celebrations this holiday season. Send us a message and we would be happy to share your heritage with the community.

DID YOU KNOW: October 15th is Pregnancy and Infant loss awareness day. Tonight, the library will be lit up in Pink and Blue to acknowledge all who have been affected by the loss of a child. Each year thousands of families across Canada mourn the death of their babies. In 2017 1,699 infants died within the first year after birth and 3,159 babies were stillborn. Parents get isolated in their grief and the stigma around the death of children prevents society from speaking about... the devastating effects on parents and their families. https://www.october15.ca/ See more
