BULLETIN : Two Deaths Related to COVID-19 In the Porcupine Health Unit Area Dr. Lianne Catton, Medical Officer of Health of the Porcupine Health Unit (PHU) is ...reporting two additional deaths related to the outbreak declared at the Extendicare Long-Term Care Home in Kapuskasing. With these, six lives have been lost during this outbreak. Out of respect for the families during this difficult time, no further details will be shared. The Porcupine Health Unit offers their most sincere sympathies to the families and loved ones, says Dr. Catton. Our most vulnerable community members need our help to protect them from COVID-19 and the tragic outcomes associated with this infection, adds Dr. Catton. It is critical that everyone follow the public health measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19. Please stay home and only go out for essential purposes. If you must go out, wear a mask, maintain 2 m between and others who do not live in your household, wash your hands often and cough and sneeze in your sleeve. We continue to work with Extendicare, the Ministry of Long Term Care, Ontario Health, and local acute and primary health care partners to ensure all supports and practices are in place to reduce the risk and contain this outbreak. Our thoughts are with all of the residents, families, staff and community members. The health and safety of all staff, professional staff, patients, care partners and the community is our utmost priority. In response to the rise in COVID-19 ca...ses in Ontario, travel restrictions will be reinstated at our Hospital. Effective Tuesday, October 6th, travel outside of Northern Ontario (Parry Sound to the Manitoba border) in the past seven days will result in a failed entrance screening. These travel restrictions apply to staff, professional staff, patients who require non-urgent care, volunteers, learners, Care Partners and Essential Care Partners and are in line with the recommendations of the Thunder Bay District Health Unit for the protection of our community. We understand that travel restrictions can be difficult, especially for those who are separated from friends and family. However, Ontario has entered the second wave of the #COVID19 pandemic and we must be extra vigilant for the protection of all, including the most vulnerable patients in our care, said Dr. Stewart Kennedy, COVID-19 Incident Manager. Travel restrictions in the first wave were integral to limiting the impact of COVID-19 in our community and Hospital. Your continued understanding and cooperation is highly appreciated. Patients with Care Partners or Essential Care Partners who have travelled outside of Northern Ontario in the past seven days will be permitted to identify an alternate. Our Hospital is committed to helping patients and families stay connected and offers virtual visits through FaceTime and Skype. If you would like to arrange a virtual care visit with a patient admitted to our Hospital, please contact the Telemedicine Department at Tel. (807) 684-6711 or email [email protected] between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday to Friday. Travel restrictions can change frequently and will be updated as the situation evolves.

DAILY COVID-19 UPDATE FOR FRIDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2020 The Porcupine Health Unit (PHU) is reporting one new COVID-19 case among residents in the area of Hearst, Hor...nepayne. Visit phu.fyi/covid-cases for more information about positive cases in the PHU area. If somebody in your household is experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, it is recommended they stay home and seek testing. They should self-isolate until their test results come back. Other members of the household could continue with their daily routines. This decision was made with the local context in mind (currently a low number of cases of COVID-19 within the community) and may change if the number of COVID-19 cases in our district increases, or on follow-up with specific individual situations. Household members and other contacts of the symptomatic person should monitor themselves closely for symptoms, isolate immediately if ANY symptoms occur and arrange to be tested. If someone in your household is a confirmed case for COVID-19, all members of the household would have to self-isolate. Or, if an individual in your household is considered a close contact of a confirmed case, they would be advised to self-isolate because of their potential exposure while other members could continue with their daily routines. However, if this close contact were to develop symptoms then all members of the household would need to self-isolate until the test results are back. If there is any concern about a particular situation, please do not hesitate to call the health unit. Practice physical distancing of 2 metres (6 feet), wear face coverings, cover coughs/sneezes, wash your hands often and please stay home if you have any symptoms. COVID-19 is circulating in our communities. We need to act as though exposure is probable and possible every day in every community regardless of case announcements. Our COVID-19 Information line is open today from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Call the toll-free number, 1-800-461-1818 or the PHU office in your community. See phu.fyi/offices for local contact numbers.

It is by working together that we will continue to stay healthy and safe, and together we will get through this. This year our Public Health Champion awards will honour Algoma residents who have demonstrated exemplary kindness, compassion, and community spirit while helping others overcome the challenges of COVID-19. A Public Health Champion may be an individual or group of individuals, an organization, employer, or employee. Many Algoma residents and organizations have courageously helped others access essentials such as groceries, volunteered their time to help priority populations remain socially connected, helped facilitate a positive re-opening of workplaces, and helped others access and understand credible public health information.
