We did a mini interview with Doctor Who artist Colin Howard on 'The Remembrance of the Daleks DWM cover' we own and his work on Doctor Who - check out his websi...te here and see below the questions we asked him http://www.colinhowardartwork.com/Dr_Who.html#Dr%20Who 1) How did the BBC brief you on the magazine cover? Did you get any photos or have to remember what you saw on the show. No brief really (especially not from the BBC!,as it was solely a Marvel UK DWM cover) It was during John Freeman's Editorial tenure, often back then you'd watch the program go out live, and some little idea might trigger, and I'd think that'd be a great cover idea. And that pitched battle with the Daleks and their shuttle arriving ticked alot of boxes for me. 2) how long did this piece take make Back then deadlines (as nowadays depending on who you work for) were fairly tight, I'd often be contacted to do a cover for DWM and be given around a week to 10 days to produce a sketch, and submit the final Artwork, and pray the Post would be on time! 3) what was your first ever doctor who piece you did for the BBC? For the BBC it was the 'Two Doctors' VHS cover, I was asked to pick between that story and Resurrection of the Daleks, Getting to paint Patrick Troughton was what swung it for me. followed by the 'Planet of Evil' cover, a version of which was already in my Portfolio. For DWM it was a Full page comic strip for the Archive-Masque of Mandragora, after I'd met John Freeman at a Convention, and had been badgering DWM for a little while after illustrating for Fanzines 'Cloister Bell & Cosmic Masque'. 4) What's it like working on the animations in comparison to your normal art work you do ? Working on the animations was pretty interesting, it avoids the 'Poison Chalice' of painting a Cover with only the animated characters allowed,as regular portraits would be deemed misrepresentative of the content, unless there's a surviving episode! After working a tiny amount on 'Power' (Just the Tardis exterior in Pt 1 & 6) I was asked for half the backgrounds on Shada,as well as lots of 'props-rendering' for populating the scenery, I did all those digitally. Then with 'Macra' I was one of a team of 3.The Producer back then 'Charles Norton', asked if I would paint them all traditionally, which we both thought fits better with the line drawn animation style of the Characters. Otherwise it could look visually jarring if the backgrounds are too polished? Just a shame we had such a Hot Summer that year, and my paint was drying on the brushes before hitting the illustration surface! Unfortunately things have now changed with a new Producer and I am no longer part of the team, the same fate met the other background artists. At least I have been able to contribute 'On-screen' to the Show I love, as well as all the other elements over the years with Illustrations (Black & White & Colour) and numerous covers for magazine/book/VHS/Dvd 5) What's your favorite Doctor Who monster ? I grew up in the John Freilander era of Doctor Who, so I was spoilt for choice really. I have always loved the Cybermen, and these days could do with a good Telosian/Mondasian Scientist to replace my affected parts & nervous system Other than that most of the Classic Monsters like Ice Warriors/Silurians/Sea Devils/Draconians/Ogrons/Yeti etc are all suburb designs on a shoestring
