On 29 December 1956 HMCS Magnificent set sail for Egypt carrying Canadian troops and equipment for a United Nations peacekeeping mission there. The Suez Crisis... of 1956 threatened to draw the world into a war. To help diffuse the tense situation, Canadian Secretary of State for External Affairs Lester B. Pearson proposed that the United Nations send a multinational, neutral peacekeeping force to Egypt to separate the opposing sides and enforce a ceasefire. This was the first large-scale UN peacekeeping mission and Canadians would play an important role. On 21 December 1943, as Christmas approached, Canadian soldiers began a bitter battle in the ancient town of Ortona, Italy. Soon the streets were so full of ru...bble and the enemy fire was so fierce that our soldiers often had to resort to an innovative technique called mouseholing. This involved blowing a hole in the wall between adjoining houses and then rushing in with grenades and rifles. This strategy allowed them to advance from building to building without being exposed to heavy enemy fire on the streets. #CanadaRemembers http://ow.ly/BQSG50CQX2v Pictured are Canadian tanks and infantry members advancing through the streets of Ortona. #OTD Operation WELLHIT (Battle of Boulogne) was completed in 1944. Led by 3rd Canadian Division, the battle lasted from September 17-22 and resulted in the capt...ure of the heavily fortified city of Boulougne-sur-Mer, France. As a city on the English Channel, Boulogne was one of several Channel ports to be named as a fortress by the Reich. With additional defensive measures in place, the attack by the Canadians relied on a combination of air and land power. This coordination led to the eventual capitulation of the occupying Germans. Many units that participated in the assault still exist today: - The North Shore (New Brunswick) Regiment - Le Régiment de la Chaudière - The Queen's Own Rifles of Canada - Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry Highlanders - The Fort Garry Horse - The Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa

#CanadaRemembers-15-16 September 1993-Canadians serving with United Nations forces in Croatia saw heavy action at the Medak Pocket. http://ow.ly/mfjs50Bqq9L Pea...cekeeping has often been challenging duty for Canadian Armed Forces members, especially when there is very little peace to keep. That was often the situation in the former Yugoslavia when the country descended into civil war in the early 1990s. In mid-September 1993, soldiers of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry in the Medak Pocket of Croatia would find themselves in the midst of the heaviest firefight Canadians had experienced since the Korean War. #OTD in 1939, Canada declared war on Germany, and joined the Allies in the six year struggle that would eventually span the globe. More than one million Canadia...ns and Newfoundlanders served in the military more than 45,000 gave their lives and another 55,000 were wounded. At war's end, Canada had become a significant military power, including an army of six full divisions. We rose to the challenge then, and have time and time again since. We remain #StrongProudReady to serve.

#CanadaRemembers-26 August 1918-The 2nd Battle of Arras began with Canadian soldiers at the forefront of a major Allied assault in the closing months of the Fir...st World War. http://ow.ly/mR2H50B8Ljz One of the largest actions in which the Canadian Corps took part in during the First World War was the 2nd Battle of Arras. Launched in northern France on late August 1918, our soldiers were again at the spearhead of the Allied attack which was intended to break through the Drocourt-Quéant (D-Q) Line, a system of enemy trench lines that fronted the Germans’ primary defensive positionthe Hindenburg Line. The Canadians courageously fought their way forward and broke through on September 2. Pictured is a captured German pillbox from the D-Q Line. Photo: Library and Archives Canada See more

Remember Flanders The crested buttons, the cap badge and uniform details are specific to John McCrae, 1915. On his uniform, his Major’s rank is visible and the ...Gunner badge on his cap and the grenades on his lapels represent his service with the Canadian Field Artillery. As he writes with a notepad in hand, his medical bag is nearby and at his feet are poppies. In part because of the poem's popularity, the poppy was adopted as the Flower of Remembrance for the war dead of Britain, France, the United States, Canada and other Commonwealth countries. It was erected by the Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery in collaboration with the Royal Canadian Medical Service. This beautiful statue stands beside the National Artillery Memorial and was unveiled on May 3, 2015 the 100th anniversary of the writing of his renowned poem.
