Fall is upon us. I can see the season changing right before my eyes. Sometimes in life we can see these sorts of changes occurring and other times change occurs and were surprised by the outcome. Has this ever happened to you? Many clients have shared this experience with me. Surprised and even shocked at the changes in their life when there has been a big life transition. For example, when they bring baby home. They're surprised that not only do they not recognize their old... life but this new life is not like anything they either imagined or planned for. They feel like strangers with their partner. They sometimes have buyers remorse! Of course they're too afraid to say that out loud for fear someone will think they're a terrible Mom. New parents spend so much time planning their delivery. I'm not saying this is wrong but I just wish couples spent more time contemplating their new roles as parents. Examining their own family of origins and wandering how their own upbringing and that of their partners will Impact them in their roles as parents. Consider, when my baby is all grown up, what words do I want them to use to describe me as their parent? What will they say about their experience in my care? See more
