September 10th, World Suicide Prevention Day Unfortunately some of us have experienced the loss of some one close due to suicide. Look for the signs and be prepared to be as open and honest as possible about what you are seeing and your concern. Most of the times what people need is someone to talk to openly about how they feel. Comments such as these could prevent people from seeking help: "You wouldnt do something silly, right?"... "Dont say that, things are going to work out well" "You wouldnt do that, think about (fill in the blank)" "But you are so young/beautiful/handsome, you shouldnt feel that way" "Dont think that way, you have so much to live for" Some people might think that starting this conversation could potentially "put ideas in their heads" however, the opposite is true - openinig the conversation can save a life. Finding the right partner is not a matter of luck or fate, but a matter of something called attachment. Thats right, in order to survive, all humans are biologically designed to get attached, when we are children to our caregivers, and when we are adults to our partners. All of us have a specific attachment style. There is no exception. There are three basic attachment styles: anxious, avoidant and secure. ... If you answered yes to at least 2 of the statements above, you might have an anxious attachment style. In general, people who identify with anxious attachment have a deep fear of abandonment and being alone. This style needs a partner who offers healthy, consistent reassurance of love and security. If not with the right partner, they might end up in abusive or distant relationships which will make them feel unhappy. Through counselling you can learn how to identify your attachment style and ways to establish healthy, satisfactory relationships. While some couples avoid conflict at all cost, others use it as a way to bond or spice things up. However, conflict is not to be feared or used to keep the "flame" alive. When we avoid it, we might end up in a lifeless relationship in which partners do not develop the level of intimacy required to maintain a healthy, long-lasting relationship. If we use it to keep the relationship alive, we might end up living in a constant drama, which might lead to exhaustion, a lack of tru...st and hurt. As relationships mature, conflict will arise, thats guaranteed. When couples deal with it in a healthy way, the relationship will only grow stronger. The key is to create a safe space in which each other can share their thoughts, opinions and needs without blaming, minimizing, competing, or using the information shared to hurt the other. Where to start? First, we need to work on our listening skills. Most of us are ready to jump with our "yes, but", "but you..." before the other finishes a sentence. Ask those around you - do they feel safe talking to you? Do people hide information from you out of fear of your reaction? Or do they rather avoid it because you wont listen anyway? We also need to learn how to communicate in a way that others understand. Sometimes we do not express how we feel because we dont want to hurt others or do it in rather indirect ways. What is it that you dont like or would like it to change? Are you open about it? Sometimes we need to change our strategy if our way is not giving us good results. When handling conflict, it is also important to focus on the issue at hand, with the intention to solve it. Venting, complaining and blaming hardly ever facilitate good communication and problem-solving. And lastly, it also takes a good amount of responsibility-taking to deal with conflict. My wellbeing is my responsibility and therefore I cant put it in someone elses hands, even if its my partner. After facilitating anger management workshops for over 10 years, I can affirm that anger is the most misunderstood emotion. Since we are children we are taught that anger is bad and therefore we learn to either suppress it, or express it in unhealthy ways, therefore confirming the belief that its not good to get upset. Most of my clients tell me they are not upset. However they cant complain enough about how annoyed they are about certain situations, coworkers, partners, c...hildren, etc. Yes, annoyance, frustration, irritability, impatience is anger. Anger is a very healthy emotion. Yes, it is! What is the problem then? The way we express it. I repeat - the way we express it. Anger is a healthy emotional response to situations where our boundaries are being crossed; when we perceive something is unjust or unfair; or when things dont go our way. Anger gives us the courage and energy to do something about it. When do we get in trouble? When we express it in a destructive way; when instead of using it to solve a problem we use it to hurt; or when we yell, scream or cry just to express were upset for the sake of people knowing that were upset. Next time you feel annoyed, frustrated, or get inpatient, please take a moment to first acknowledge the emotion you are feeling because our bodies are wise and give us what we need to respond accordingly. If its anger, our anger will give us the energy we need to deal with the situation at hand. Then think about what the problem seems to be and how you can solve it. The third step would be to think about ways in which you can communicate your needs, focusing on creating understanding. It is not easy to change our old ways, however, it is not impossible. Anger should not be a constant in our lives. It should help us assert ourselves in ways that create communication and understanding rather that conflict and alienation. Smoking can become a coping mechanism that could seem to offer comfort, relaxation, joy, a scape to boredom, a way to deal with depression or anxiety, or to socialize. However overtime it can bring serious health problems, not only for the smoker but those around them. Quitting smoking is not easy at all! If you have ever tried or considered trying, you know its complicated, however, it is not impossible. The key is to seek the resources you need not only to deal with the ...chemical dependency that it creates, but also the habits and emotional links the individuals tend to develop around their smoking. Eventhough some people can quit "cold turkey" it is important to still seek support as you may replace it with something else, for example, food, sweets, drinking, gambling, etc. It is important also to identify the role the dependency has in your life to replace it with healthy coping mechanisms. You dont need to want to quit altogether to talk about your smoking. Yesterday I came across an article about challenging our level of comfort in talking and taking a stand on racism. Journalist Nam Kiwanuka writes: ... "Over and over, perpetrators are given the benefit of the doubt, and victims have to prove that they didnt deserve what happened to them. This should not be a so-called Black issue. This should be something that concerns every one of us. If this conversation makes you uncomfortable, ask yourself why. Why is having conversations about race considered preachy or tough? What is tough about discussing something that entire systems are built on? Why are we so afraid to name prejudice and bigotry? Why is it more offensive to call someone racist than it is to acknowledge the impacts that it has on communities? How can we address something and combat it if we cant even name it? We definitely need to get out of our comfort zone, and stop believing that there is a "neutral" stand when it comes to racism. It is expected to feel a sense of grief when we lose something or someone. It can be a loved one, a job, a relationship, a house, you name it. However, we can also get a sense of grief when dealing with changes, even if they are positive and expected. For example, I might get very excited about moving to a new house while at the same time feel sad for leaving the place where I currently live. How are you feeling with the changes we are globally going through due to the COVID-...19 pandemic? Some of us might be going through what could resemble a sense of grief as we have had to give up our ability to go out, gather, go to places we usually go, travel, and so on. Some people have lost their jobs, while others a loved one. It has not been easy. Patience and compassion are so important at this moment. It is hard to deal with uncertainty and the unknown. It is ok to feel sad some days, while good on others. However, if you notice that you feel sad or afraid more often than not, and start feeling a sense of hopeless, it is important to reach out and talk to someone. Although we need to respect recommendations such as social distancing, it is important to feel connected and supported. Try to get in touch with people you love and care about. Try calling that neighbor who lives alone. This will shall pass, and well be able to go back to what we know as "normal", maybe not tomorrow, but eventually. In the meantime lets be safe, lets stay connected, lets be kind and above all lets be patient. These are the 5 stages of grief. Following the recommendations issued by the Public Health Agency of Canada, we are temporarily suspending all face-to-face services and groups. Instead were offering online/telephone counselling and long-distance healing (Reiki, Shamanic and Huna Healing). The upcoming meditation group (April 7th) has been cancelled, and the Reiki 1 workshop has been moved to the end of April. This past month has been very challenging for most of us. Lets try to do what we can by staying ...home as much as possible; avoiding social gatherings; keeping our distance when seeing people; washing our hands regularly; eating healthy, and disinfecting surfaces such as phones, control remotes, other electronics, door handles, toys, toilets, faucets, and so on. Although simple to say, we acknowledge that these measures could cause extra stress. Lets try to make the most out of it by focusing our attention on nourishing our mind, heart, body and spirit. We can dedicate our time to do what we sometimes dont have the time to do, for example, reading uplifting materials, watching uplifting movies/series; try meditating, and being as active as possible indoors. YouTube has so many great workouts and meditations. Check up on more vulnerable friends, family members, neighbors, etc.; get in touch with those you love using platforms such as Facetime or Skype, and please, when shopping think of others and take only what you need. Also be mindful of how much time you spend on social media. It is very easy to get lost surfing the internet. Set time limits and also limit how much you read about the virus. Its important to keep updated but not to a point in which it causes anxiety or feelings of hopelessness. On March 8th we celebrate the International Womens Day, "a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women" (internationalwomensday.com). A day to celebrate but also to remember that there is a long way to go if we consider that women around the world are still at larger risk of suffering from discrimination, poverty, lack of opportunities, slavery and violence. According to the United Nations: Globally, 750 million women and girls... were married before the age of 18 and at least 200 million women and girls in 30 countries have undergone female genital mutilation. In 18 countries, husbands can legally prevent their wives from working; in 39 countries, daughters and sons do not have equal inheritance rights; and 49 countries lack laws protecting women from domestic violence. One in five women and girls, including 19 per cent of women and girls aged 15 to 49, have experienced physical and/or sexual violence by an intimate partner within the last 12 months. Yet, 49 countries have no laws that specifically protect women from such violence. While women have made important inroads into political office across the world, their representation in national parliaments at 23.7 per cent is still far from parity. Daylight Saving Time begins tomorrow March 8th at 2:00 A.M. Dont forget to set your clocks forward one hour tonight. According to the Old Farmers Almanac, "the first true proponent of Daylight Saving Time was an Englishman named William Willet. A London builder, he conceived the idea while riding his horse early one morning in 1907." According to Wikipedia, the first municipally in the world to adopt the DST was Port Arthur in Ontario on July 1, 1908.... It was not until 1915 with the World War I that it was officially adopted as a "fuel-saving measure", first by the Germans; the British followed in 1916, and the United States in 1918.
