The length of the umbilical cord varies greatly. This Birth Warrior had an incredibly short cord, which meant baby couldn’t make it all the way up to her chest at birth. Didn’t slow this labour or pushing stage down though! #variationsofnormal #transitiondoulas #prenataleducation #birthwarrior #birthingfromwithin #yegdoula #edmontondoula #empoweredbirth

If you value doula support in hospitals, sign this. To be clear though, Doulas are welcomed at the Royal Alex and Misericordia right now. Not at the Grey Nuns or Sturgeon. Note that this could change at any moment.

Because she’s f$&?ing magic! Big shout out to @talker1 for crafting all of our re-usable masks - but especially these custom Transition Doula gems. And YES - we are still allowed to support our clients in ALL Edmonton area hospitals. If you’d like to order a mask, message me and I’ll connect you!

Pinch me. How can this be our job? Witnessing the power and strength of a birthing person and the courage and compassion of a birth partner. It’s absolutely amazing. Every family we support touches us in a unique way and we are grateful for the growth and wisdom that we gain from each experience.

Outdoor baby doll stroll followed by hot chocolate. What are you up to on this beautiful day?

Two spots left in our upcoming Birth Prep Birthing From Within Workshop. A full day to immerse in educating and empowering yourself for your upcoming birth. Partners will walk away with a sense of confidence and hands-on skills. Birthing people will have reduced fear, increased practice in pain-coping, and a thorough understanding of ways to make their birth experience empowering and positive. *Safe social distancing in place. Masks mandatory. Frequent sanitation* https://fb.me/e/fKeOiLMvY

Dr. Hinshaw stated in the most recent update that Doulas are (still) allowed in hospitals in addition to one support person in Labour & Delivery. In case you were curious... Happy to be recognized as an important role in maternal health!

***Important Update*** The Royal Alex Hospital is operating under COVID Protocol and is screening for extended symptoms. This means if you’ve vomited, had diarrhea, or a headache in last 24 hours (all completely normal things to happen in labour!) you will have to go into isolation for the remainder of your labour. Otherwise this hospital is allowing a certified doula and one other support person as usual. We are not encouraging anyone to hide symptoms during a very serious pandemic! We simply wish to keep you informed of current policy and procedure to help prepare you for what may come during your birth experience.

It’s that time of year for our annual Breastfeeding & Alcohol post. It usually blows a few minds. Ready? ~It is completely safe to drink alcohol and still feed that milk to your baby (whether pumped or straight from the breast)~ Boom! ... There is a lot of misinformation that would lead you to believe otherwise. Think of it this way - if you had consumed so much alcohol that you blew 0.08 when tested(which means you’re pretty tipsy), that means your breastmilk is 0.08% alcoholic. That is about the same as a non-alcoholic beer. Alcohol metabolizes in your milk the same way it does in your blood. Enjoy yourself. Co-sleeping and parenting while under the influence is a whole different conversation. But your milk? Totally safe! No pumping and dumping required. If you’d like more info on this evidence-based statement, feel free to email us at [email protected].

My post birth ritual - a hot bath and food (it’s not always as elegant as cinnamon toast crunch cereal...). What do you do to wind down at the end of a long day? ~Kayla

Welcome baby! It’s been a busy week for us. So grateful for the birth of three healthy babies and three beautiful sets of parents! And a huge shout out to Erin for the extra support this week. I am so lucky to have such an amazing partner. #transitiondoulas #yegdoula #edmontondoula #homehospital #prenataleducation #birthingfromwithin #spinningbabies
