LAST SUP RENTAL DAY at Lake Edith is tomorrow, Saturday, September 5. (There’s a blast of cool fall weather in the forecast starting Sunday so we’ll be closed the rest of the long weekend). What fast and furious season it was! Time for savasana. We are beat.... Thank you Canada

It doesn't matter if you have a selfie stick, a fly swatter, or a curling broom, there's no good reason to approach an elk. You're not allowed to approach wildlife in Jasper Park. You must stay in your vehicle near animals. https://www.pc.gc.ca//bulletins/A8A66AB1-D0DB-4300-B227-8E

Stacking and moving rocks in our waters may cause big trouble for our fish species. It may seem harmless, but even the smallest of rock dams can cause debris to... build up and can block fish from swimming upstream. Fish like the threatened bull trout travel upstream to spawn at this time of year, and they need to be able to swim through connected habitat. Human-made barriers in the water can block their return to spawning grounds. The shallow water below a dam doesn’t allow fish to jump over the rocks. The slow water upstream of the dam can heat up in the summer sun, becoming too warm for our cold-water fish. If you see a rock dam, please take it apart or report it to Parks Canada staff. #ParksSmart #LeaveNoTrace

Hello SUP lovers. Is anyone out there interested in taking a Paddle Canada SUP Flatwater Instructor certification course? I'm looking at organizing one on Lake Edith for the end of August. Cost would likely be $399 for three days as per industry standard. Put up your hand or send me a message so I can see if we have enough people keen to pull it off.

We have gorgeous new Pau Hana Endurance Ricochet touring boards for you to try as part of our rental fleet this summer. We’re looking at opening Saturday, July 4 depending on the weather. Our daily hours of operation will be 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. So far, we plan to be open all days that are warmer than 15C/ 59F. But this pandemic reality is all an experiment right so please be kind and patient.... We are encouraging folks to pay for their rentals online and sign their waivers in advance to maximize social distancing at our Lake Edith SUP shack. Links will be on our web site shortly. You will still register for courses and special events via our Registration page at www.translucidadventures.com but the rental payment section will be a different site and links will be on the home page and rental sections. Rentals paid in advance do not include a reservation time so it is still a first-come first-serve model, but you’re welcome to give an estimated arrival time. If you’re ever unsatisfied with the wait time at arrival when you’ve paid in advance then we will happily offer a full refund.

We are offering this in a weekday evening format (6-8:30pm nightly) so that we can accommoda...te folks working weekends. If you have not yet taken your Advanced Flatwater SUP with us or another Paddle Canada instructor then you can join me for that July 12. Based on interest, I will also offer this course as two weeknight trainings before our river gathering. Registration links will be posted next week. Jasper rivers are flood-level high! We suggest all river SUP enthusiast avoid paddling in these conditions. The consequences of falling in are large right now. Watching the river from the banks of the airfield yesterday, I saw numerous large trees moving downstream and hitting mostly submerged strainers (trees underwater that would tangle you in place if you fell in before them). Unless you have extensive river experience on a SUP, stick to the flatwater lake paddling for th...e time being. Stay safe folks. https://app.cyberimpact.com/newsletter-view-online

Outlined in this article are some of the scientific reasons for our preference for rash guards and swim tights instead of sunscreen. Clothing can help you regulate your preferred amount of sun exposure while not contributing harmful chemicals to our sensitive kettle lake ecosystems in Jasper National Park.

Some great advice that is especially important if you are considering paddling on Maligne Lake. Most people unfamiliar with cold water find 70F (21C) to be quite cold. On the other hand, a competitive open-water swimmer who is used to swimming in 55F (13C) water will probably think that 70F (21C) doesn’t feel very cold at all. What’s important to your safety is how you personally respond to cold water. Acclimation and body fat can make a significant difference in how someo...ne responds to cold water. Acclimation is a process by which your body gradually adapts itself to cold water through repeated exposure. Through acclimation, it’s possible to improve circulation to the hands during cold water immersion, and to greatly reduce or eliminate cold shock. See more

We miss you too and know that it is hard not to visit Jasper National Park but for now let’s all do our part. Please refrain from visiting Jasper over the Ma...y long weekend. #InThisTogether All camping facilities, and visitor services and facilities remain closed. Weekend road closures are also in place to discourage illegal camping. Camping including sleeping in a vehiclein roadside pullouts, trailheads, and day-use areas is illegal. Translucid Adventures 02.03.2020

Even when visitor services, facilities, and vehicle access are suspended in Jasper National Park, Parks Canada continues to deliver services critical to the com...munity of Jasper, including wildfire management. The Fire Danger Rating in Jasper National Park is currently moderate. This will soon change, as temperatures rise, and grass and vegetation in the valley bottom dry out. This "Spring dip" is the time between the snow melting and the plants gaining their leaves. With no leaves on trees and shrubs, the sun is able to reach directly to the ground. Until plants green-up and sprout new life, they hold very little water. Plant moisture is typically at its lowest during "Spring Dip." In Jasper, this usually results in elevated fire danger near the end of May.

Parks Canada would like to congratulate Layla Neufeld on winning the "Kristina Norstrom Dedicated Service Award 2020" for her dedicated contribution to the Albe...rta Chapter of The Wildlife Society. Layla is a caribou biologist in Jasper National Park and if she is not out in the field collecting information about caribou, deer, elk and wolves in a variety of ways such as remote cameras or scat DNA analysis, she is working tirelessly behind the scene monitoring and evaluating impacts and recovery options for these species. From the comfort of your home, we invite you to meet other incredible women in science from Jasper National Park. Get inspired, and learn about what they do, and how they became leaders in science! #ParksFromHome https://www.pc.gc.ca//pn-np/ab//nature/femme-science-woman

Hello paddlers, Our favorite playground remains closed until at least May 31, 2020. What happens next for all of us, including operations at Translucid Adventures, is still a mystery. I will keep you posted as we know more. I have a few creative solutions up my sleeves for getting local punch pass holders out on the water should physical distance restrictions be eased slightly over the next two months.

In a study of 20,000 people, a team led by Mathew White of the European Centre for Environment & Human Health at the University of Exeter, found that people who spent two hours a week in green spaces local parks or other natural environments, either all at once or spaced over several visits were substantially more likely to report good health and psychological well-being than those who don’t. Two hours was a hard boundary: The study, published last June, showed there were no benefits for people who didn’t meet that threshold.

Please stop buying bottled water in bulk like this and carry a reusable water bottle instead. I’ve read of folks, particularly parents, making understandable arguments for bottled water at events or gas stations because potable water fountains are sometimes hard to find. But buying water in bulk like this is not about getting caught without options or forgetting your bottle at home. This is unconscious consumerism based on our economy of convenience and we need to do better!
