PLEASE READ THIS THOROUGHLY! Y'all that are so thankful for truck drivers now are so quick to cry out "We need to help the truck drivers! They're so important! ...What can we do to help?" They've ALWAYS needed a place to eat. They've ALWAYS needed a place to use the restroom. They've ALWAYS needed a clean place to shower. They've ALWAYS needed a safe place to park. They've ALWAYS needed a little respect and courtesy on the road. They've ALWAYS needed to be treated as human beings. But... They've ALWAYS had to keep peanut butter and crackers in their truck in case there's no restaurant that they can get to before their hours run out. They've ALWAYS often had to resort to a dirty port-a-potty in the parking lot of a warehouse, or they've "managed" in the cab of their truck. They've ALWAYS kept baby wipes and spray deodorant in their trucks in case they didn't have enough reward points for a free shower and couldn't afford to pay $12-15 to buy one, or couldn't wait 2, 3, 4 hours for a truck stop shower to be empty. They've ALWAYS spent the last couple hours of their shift looking for a place to park for the night where their truck won't get booted, and they won't have a cop or security guard wake them up and tell them to move along. "But I'm out of hours -- if I move I'll be violating a federal regulation." "Not my problem. I'm calling a tow truck if you're not out of here in two minutes." Do you realize what it's like to know your loved one is sleeping on the side of an on-ramp? Have you ever been on Google maps, searching in an area hundreds of miles away for a truck stop or a warehouse with no gate or hell even just a dead end road wide enough to turn a truck around, just so you can try to help them have somewhere safe to sleep? Do you know what it's like to hear their Qualcomm counting down in the background "You have 1 hour of remaining drive time... you have 30 minutes of remaining drive time... you have 15 minutes of remaining drive time... you are out of hours of service..." Do you know how heart-wrenching it is to say "I'm sorry. There's nowhere?" They've ALWAYS gotten cut off, and flipped off, and had cars stay in their blind spot, and been brake-checked, and had cars refuse to let them over, and had horns blown at them when they drop speed climbing a hill, and been cussed at for going slower or spraying water off their tires or for snow blowing off the top of their trailer or for just being there. They've ALWAYS been told to make their pick up or delivery, then get out of town as quickly and quietly as possible. City ordinance says no idling. Doesn't matter if the APU is down and it's 10 in January or 90 in July. No APU + No Idling ordinance = No heat or no A/C for a driver who will sit for HOURS Rules say no overnight parking. Doesn't matter that the warehouse kept them waiting 6 hours past their appointment time and it's 2am. Leave. You've done what we needed you for. We don't need you now so we don't want you here. This, and so much more, has ALWAYS been their reality. They have missed so many birthdays and holidays, first steps and graduations. They've ALWAYS been treated as second-class, as a nuisance, an inconvenience. But they've ALWAYS delivered everything you need. They've ALWAYS blown the air horn when your kid pumped their arm. They've ALWAYS pulled the sheets off their own bed in the sleeper to cover a fatality if they come accross an accident before emergency services get there. They've ALWAYS done a job that many can't do, or won't do because they feel it's beneath them. But now you appreciate them. NOW you're thankful for them. The current outpouring of appreciation is great, but will it continue for a month? Two? How about around Christmas? When you're rushing around to buy all the perfect gifts, will you appreciate truckers then, too? Or will you be aggravated that they're going a little slower than you? Will you complain that their trucks are noisy? Will you have forgotten how much you claim to care? But for now, you're glad to see them. *Stolen post*
