Laid out within medieval walls, L'Aquila sits upon a hillside in the middle of n the wide valley of the Aterno river. It is surrounded by the tall snow-capped mountains of the Apennine Mountains, and those of the Gran Sasso d'Italia, which flank the town to the north-east. A maze of narrow streets, lined with Baroque and Renaissance buildings and churches, open onto elegant piazzas. Home to the University of L'Aquila, it is a lively college town and, as such, has many cultural institutions: a repertory theatre, a symphony orchestra, a fine-arts academy, a state conservatory, and a film institute. Since the devastating earthquake of April 2009, when L'Aquila, was almost completely destroyed, those numbers have unfortunately decreased, however, restoration of buildings and monuments are still in progress today. Thankfully some significant natural endowments, including the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, the oldest park in Italy survived the quake, as well as, the 13th-century fountain & city landmark where water spurts from the mouths of 99 sculpted heads.
