Not your typical tourist, Theroux often passes up the better known spots in places like Greece and Italy for close encounters with locals in Syria and Turkey. For me, Theroux is travel writing at it's best.

Around the World in 80 Books. #64 I found Jon Krakauer's account of the 1996 disaster on Mt Everest riveting. 8 climbers killed and others stranded by a storm. You may have noticed I have a think for these "adventure" type tales...

Around the World in 80 Books. #59 An admitted grump and self-help book aficionado undertook a year's research to travel the globe, looking for "unheralded happy places." The result is this book, equal parts laugh-out-loud funny and philosophical, a journey into both the definition of and the destination for true contentment. Weiner also visits the country deemed most malconten...t, Moldova, and finds real merit in the claim. But the question remains: What makes people happy? I loved this book. If you've ever doubted that money can't buy happiness this is the book for you!
