One of my clients said this to me the other day when I was making a suggestion for his new office space. It was something that was obvious to me because of my 2 decades of working in and managing offices but something he wouldn't have thought of. His strengths lie in sales and team management so that's what he focuses on (rightly so). He knows what he doesn't know and gets help where he needs it. Exactly what smart business owners do. If your business is feeling stuck or stale, clean up your office or workspace. It sounds super basicand it is but it’s incredibly powerful. Your environment directly impacts your energy. You may be thinking ‘but this is going to take time, and the problem is I don’t have enough!’. Have you ever kept track of the time you spend looking for something? We waste, on average, over 30 minutes per day looking for lost items. What if you spent 30 minutes one day, cleaning up your o...ffice? First Remove everything that shouldn’t be in your workspace. If it’s not an item you use for your business, it shouldn’t be in the workspace. A few inspirational items, that you absolutely love, are fine. Next Go through everything that’s left. I meaneverything. The things you may naturally skim over, are most likely the things that are taking up valuable real estate and the first items thatneedto go. The key to organizing anything is to have less of it, so bebrutal. Finally Give the workspace a thorough cleaning. Dust, sweep, vacuum, mopwash walls if they need it. You may even want to perform a smudge ceremony. I love doing this to clear out negative energy that has accumulated in the space. It seems like stale energy can build faster in a work area than any other area. Once you’ve tidied, decluttered and cleaned make sure you always #cleartoneutral. I read about this term @asianefficiencyand they talk about how whenever there is a hurdle in front of a task you are about to work on, it will cause you to lose motivation. ‘Friction is procrastination’s best friend’ they say. This is a key concept if you want to have lasting benefits after you declutter your business. When your workspace isn’t set up efficiently, it impacts everything you do in that space. Short answer? No. You can definitely start a business without a business plan. People do it all the time. However, I’d like to know how many failed businesses didn’t have a business plan. If you know everything there is to know about how to get your business idea off the ground and you don’t need any financial assistance to start, you most likely don’t need a business plan. ... If you want to learn as much as possible about your business before you start, writing a business plan is valuable. It’s not just writing a boring 40 page document, it’s learning about your business before it gets off the ground. It’s an instruction manual to starting your business. What do you think the most important skill a business owner can have is? To know how to manage? Having a good head for business? ... Perhaps, to be good at marketing? Or is it being a people person? Maybe, it’s being a really hard worker? What about being good with money? Nope. It’s knowing what you’re good at and, arguably more importantly, what you’re not good at. Being self-aware is an incredible skill to have but it’s not so common. In order to run a successful business, you need to take responsibility for your shortcomings and get support where you need it. Knowing what you don’t know is one of the best attributes to have as a business owner. If you think you’re the only one who can do what needs to be done in your business, the business will either fail, or you will burn out fast and it will be impossible for the business to grow. It’s never too early to ask for help. You’ll be ahead of the game if you get help even before you launch. ESPECIALLY, before you launch. If I hadn’t gone through an entrepreneurship course, my business would have failed before it got started. Determine your strengths. Focus on them. Determine your weaknesses. Get help with them. Let go and trust the people you’ve engaged to help. Trust me, I know how hard it is to let go of a part of your business. It feels like you’re giving away a part of yourself at first. It’s something I struggle with and continue to struggle with everyday but it’s the best thing I’ve ever done for my business. Just by sitting down and outlining your strengths and weaknesses, it will diminish many of the fears you have of getting started (or of expanding your business). You can do it all, but you won’t be able to do it all well. The things you’re good at will suffer and the business won’t reach its true potential.
