FALL COLOUR WATCH Remember the fall colours start showing in the north, and work there way south. So if North Muskoka is at 100% colour change, South Muskoka might only be at 70% colour change. The fall colours come and go quicker than you think. Take a little time out to enjoy the beauty of nature. www.fourseasonstreecare.com #treedoctors, #fourseasons, #fourseasonstreecare, #pruningmarkham, #pruningnorthyork, #pruningtoronto, #pruningrichmondhill, #pruningaurora, #pruningne...wmarket, #planthealthcare, #treeservice, #treecare, #arborist, #treefertilization, #treeremoval, #treestumping, #OCAA, #LO, #ISA, #TCIA, #CNLA, #ASCA, #OntarioCommercialArboristAssociation, #LandscapeOntario, #InternationalSocietyofAboriculture, #TreeCareIndustryAssociation, #CanadianNurseryLandscapeAssociation, #AmericanSocietyofConsultingArborists, #treetrimming, #shrubtrimming, #hedgetrimming, #trees See more

It’s treasure hunt time! If gypsy moth affected your trees this summer, you can help reduce next year’s defoliation by finding and removing as many egg masses a...s possible in fall and winter. Gypsy moth egg masses are yellowish brown, flattish, covered in fuzzy hair, and about the size of a quarter or loonie. You may find as individual egg masses or clusters of them (as pictured). Scour your trees, fence posts, outdoor furniture, buildings, and other nooks and crannies on your property for egg masses, scrape them off, and dispose of them. Don’t worry about egg masses you can’t reach egg masses above the snowline may be destroyed by prolonged very cold temperatures. DORMANT OIL IN THE FALL? Dormant oil, it's not just for early spring. The cool weeks of autumn are a fantastic time for applying dormant oil to help knock down insect and mite populations. Sometimes the climactic cycles of autumn are a little more gradual in terms of temperature shifts. This makes it easier to schedule dormant oil applications. The other great advantage to fall application is that the insect populations are much easier to detect. Whereas after the winter mont...hs, insects like magnolia scale nymphs will have turned grey and become almost undistinguishable from the twigs. I’ve heard great things about dormant oil it will help to manage magnolia scale, euonymus scale, spruce spider mite and spruce gall adelgid. This is a non-toxic product of which we could be making more use. Dormant oils provide a physical barrier which restricts both the respiration and movement of many over-wintering insects. SHOULD I FERTILIZE MY TREES? Fertilization is an important aspect of mature tree and new tree care. Trees require certain elements to function and grow. Urban landscapes are often devoid of sufficient available nutrients for satisfactory growth and development. Trees may need to be fertilized to improve plant vigor. Fertilization is performed for a number of reasons; to help replenish sterile urban soils that do not get the opportunity for nutrient recycling... to help strengthen diseased trees to aid in the establishment of young trees to provide nutrients where poor soil conditions exist to provide nutrients for trees growing in adverse conditions (i.e. parking lots, roadsides) to provide additional nutrition where trees are in competition for soil resources to assist older trees general maintenance to promote good plant health to increase the rate of growth The best time to fertilize your trees is when soil moisture levels are consistently high. This is usually in the Spring and Fall for most landscapes. Evergreen trees show best results when fertilized in the Fall. Avoid fertilizing during the summer when temperatures are high and soils are dry. A good choice is a fertilizer that is slow releasing and provides nutrients over a longer period of time. When dealing with a mature landscape that provides considerable benefits and value to your home, it is worth the time and investment to have the soil tested for nutrient content. If fertilizers are not needed or not applied wisely it may not benefit the trees at all and may adversely affect the tree. It is important to recognize when a tree needs supplemental fertilizer, which elements are needed and when and how the fertilizer should be applied. Contact Four Seasons Tree Care for fertilizing recommendations. MAGNOLIA SCALE Magnolia Scale is a soft brown insect that can kill trees if abundant. Feeding injury causes honeydew, sooty mould and twig dieback. The honeydew attracts bees, wasps and hornets. Magnolia scale overwinters as partly grown young, and begin feeding in spring and summer. Adults may be brown or mottled orange, with shallow wrinkles. By late August most of the females have produced nymphs that migrate to and settle on the new growth of a twig, where they start ...the cycle again. Depending on how badly infested a tree is, it could take several years to gain control. The Fall Webworms unsightly masses appear in the late summer into early fall. Fall webworms are the larval form of a small white moth commonly seen in summer months. The pale yellow inch long caterpillars spend the duration of their larval state inside these nests, feasting on the encased leaves. As the leaves are devoured, the webbed nest will be expanded to accommodate fresh foliage. Lasting damage to trees is rare. The impact of these pests is usually fleeting and strictly... cosmetic. There is generally no harm in leaving these webs intact. Eventually the nests will break apart on their own as webworms prepare to overwinter and leaves will regenerate. They sure aren’t pretty though, and removing them prematurely will quickly restore beauty to the landscape and reduce future outbreaks. Removal is as easy as it seems. Using a rake or long pole, simply pull down the webs and destroy the webworms by hand. The pest can also be eliminated using biological methods by tearing a hole in the delicate sack and allowing natural predators like yellow jackets, paper wasps and birds access to the caterpillars within. Insecticides are usually not necessary for control of webworms, but in extreme cases, a light coating of appropriate insecticidal spray may be applied to the nest.? www.fourseasonstreecare.com #treestuff #torontotreecare #fallwebworm #caterpillar #stouffvilletreecare #arborists #arboriculture #planthealthcare
