We wholeheartedly agree that it is time to rethink our approach to housing. That’s why we are building Atlantic Canada’s first co-housing community, one of many springing up across North America. With a dense cluster of modest private dwellings centred around a shared green space and a community building, cohousing fosters community support between neighbours and offers a much-needed solution to the isolation that has become epidemic in Canada. We all need the support of a co...mmunity at many times in our lives. Childhood, child-rearing, older age, and during illness are just the primary examples. The pandemic is showing us how important it is to have a supportive community bubble close by to help out when we are suddenly homeschooling children or quarantining. As many of us are far from our biological families, we need to create our own families, and co-housing is one effective way to do that. Governments, community planners, and housing developers could be doing more to encourage and support the development of co-housing. FACT: Cohousing works really well for introverts because there is such a clear definition between private space and community space, and such ease in moving from one type of space to another.
