"Well at least you have a beautiful healthy baby" STOP NORMALIZING BIRTH TRAUMA Some birth trauma is inevitable. Some. But the majority is not,... and we should be working as hard as we possibly can to minimize it. It shouldn't be considered an inevitable outcome, a normal part of birth. Birth trauma is not the price you pay for a baby. Birth trauma needs be treated as AN ADVERSE OUTCOME, something we are TRACKING and WORKING TO IMPROVE. It seems to me that the #1 reason we are not is because then we'd have to admit that specific practices, attitudes, individuals, and institutions are directly traumatizing people. Hormones and sleep deprivation are a much safer target, aren't they?

Hombirth in some situations can even be safer than hospital birth. Ask questions, know your options and do what feels right for you.

I can’t tell you how many times a week I get messages from doulas attending hospital births telling me about horrible experiences they are witnessing there. Mos...t doulas want to quit after a handful of births because they don’t want to be witness to the trauma, and they don’t want to drive home in their cars crying anymore wondering what could I have done to have protected my client?! They don’t call me like this from home births! And the trauma isn’t birth is so scary, I can’t handle witnessing the emergencies. What they can’t handle is the coercion, the lying, the manipulation, the disrespect. They can’t handle the fact that 30-40% of clients are getting surgeries they don’t want because their attendants don’t understand physiologic birth. They can’t handle that the blame on birth not working always gets blamed on the baby or the birther, but not on the fact that the hospital DOES NOT UNDERSTAND PHYSIOLOGIC BIRTH. Hospitals understand pathology. The only time a healthy person goes to a hospital is in the birth process. Hospitals are not for normal biological functions, they are for emergencies and surgeries. If something complicated is happening or you need surgery, that’s what they are for and we are lucky to have access to them for that! But if you are a healthy person having a healthy birth, there’s a good chance you may be *made* unhealthy just by being there. Many people think it is safer to birth in the hospital and that it’s better to be there just in case. But research and science do not support that. People are more likely to have complications and need emergency care in planned hospital births than in planned home births, and surprise scenarios at home can be handled at home and/or a move can be made to the hospital if appropriate. I’ll share my post on the science of home birth safety on my instastory (@jessicaaustinchildbirth) if you want to read the research. Doulas: The community needs you. The community needs people teaching them about how their bodies work and what their options are. Educate as many people as you can about what you know about birth so as many humans as possible can have healthy, powerful, incredible births. I’m here for ya! See more
