Like The Band, Bent Wind eschewed established music styles of the time and went on their own trip. The dark basement of 57 Sussex Street in Toronto, like the basement of "big pink" in Woodstock, NY, was their refuge. Here they were able to create the signature music style that turned their Sussex album into what has been called "the holy grail of record collectors". That may be an exaggeration, but the lp has certainly attracted a lot of attention over the years. During the creation of their unique music, mind altering substances may or may not have been involved. Who remembers? It was 1969 after all.
In 2010, to celebrate Freddy Dixon's 40 plus years as a recording artist, Trend Records released a CD version of his 1970 "Tribute To Johnny Cash" album. The lp, produced by Merv Buchanan, was recorded at Trend's farmhouse studio and released on Quality Record's Birchmount label.
In 1970 West Hill ON based Cargo had recorded their second album at Trend Records' schoolhouse studio. The lp, produced by Merv Buchanan, was released on Quality Records' Ringside label which specialized in jazz and other non-mainstream music. By this time, guitarist Bruce Oxley had left to join Chris Papputs and John Hanlon in "Three Little Pigs", a popular bar band busily touring eastern Canada. Replacing Oxley was teenage keyboard whiz Ray Parker, organist and principal songwriter in The Sedum Shadows. Shadows
Possibly the most collectible (and most bootlegged) Canadian album. Bent Wind were the quintessential garage band. They rarely appeared in concert, never played in bars or dance halls, preferring to keep to themselves, creating music that remains as unique and powerful today as when the group first surfaced in the world changing summer of 1969.
"Witch Doctor" by Toronto based Valhalla released first on Banzai, a Trend Records promo only label
Another great Canadian power rock trio from the 60s.
