2019 Sample of the Year Winner The sample of the year, as voted on by members of the lab, is this double-tusked narwhal from Greenland. The narwhal's tusk is ac...tually a canine tooth and only about 1/500 males will grow two tusks. While the tusks may play an important role in sexual selection, narwhals have recently been observed using their tusks to stun fish. We are using stable isotope analysis to assess whether there are differences in the diets of single and double-tuksed narwhals. This sample was analyzed by MA student Michael Scott. See more

Funded Opportunities for M.A. Students in Stable Isotope Analysis and Andean Archaeology at Trent University The Trent Environmental Archaeology Lab is searching for highly motivated and talented master’s (M.A.) students for the 2020/21 academic year to complete thesis projects investigating agricultural intensification, animal management practices, or trade in animal products in northern Peru or northern Chile. A number of projects are available, all of which involve stable ...isotope analysis of faunal or botanical materials and will contribute to a larger research program funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (Insight Grant: Identifying Intensification in Prehispanic Andean Agropastoral Systems, 2019-2024, $313,001). Students will have access to state-of-the-art laboratories and will find themselves in a dynamic research group at the Trent Environmental Archaeology Lab. Previous experience with stable isotope analysis or related methods is not necessary, but prospective students must be eager to learn through hands-on experience. These projects will be supervised by Dr. Paul Szpak at Trent University (https://www.paulszpak.com/copy-of-opportunities). Prospective candidates should be on track to complete their undergraduate degree by the end of the 2019/20 academic year (or have already completed their undergraduate studies) with an A or higher GPA in their last two years. Students admitted to the graduate program are provided with financial support from the university and the supervisor for two years. The deadline for applications is February 1, 2020. Interested students should contact Dr. Paul Szpak ([email protected]) in advance of this deadline.
