Blanding's turtles live in the Wildlife Sanctuary Nature Area. The Nature Areas Stewardship Plan outlines habitat enhancement for species at risk, like the Blanding's turtle, as the top priority. Habitat mapping, nesting mounds and mitigation measures are actions in the plan to protect the Blanding's turtles.
Pocket forests are small, intentionally created areas of native habitat including trees and shrubs. They grow quickly, support regional biodiversity and support Indigenous species. Where do you want to see pocket forests on the Symons campus?
The University Green Network connects the 11 Nature Areas and green spaces that makeup 60% of the Trent Symons campus. Directly addressing concerns about fragmentation of the natural environment, it will be a connected system of diverse habitats that support biodiversity and ensures access to natural spaces for learning, recreation and mental health.
It’s about water: The draft Plan proposes closing River Road through the East Bank, connecting the wetlands to the river, and reducing runoff from winter salting and traffic. This plan supports active transportation, providing safer routes for cyclists and pedestrians.
Habitat welcoming space for nature: the draft Trent Lands and Nature Areas Plan introduces pollinator gardens to add food and habitat to pollinators and other important insects. These gardens will help create active landscapes across campus and support biodiversity.
