We are launching a Turtle Tunnel Project in The Land Between region and we are looking for steel barrels! This year we are experimenting- we are retrofitting a ...site where turtles cross the road (county roads) and where there is an existing culvert, by installing a recycled barrel fence to direct turtles to go under the road and through culvert- making it safely to the other side! This concave fencing design was tested across sites in America and also in Haliburton by the local land trust. The turtles cannot climb the ~2ft arch shape and these half-pipes can be backfilled to grade/ground level so other wildlife can get off the road safely too and don’t get trapped. But the best benefits of barrels are they are inexpensive, only take labour (and no heavy equipment) to install, are a form of recycling, are stronger, and more weather resistant. Do you know of any steel barrels (free from toxins or harmful substances) that can be donated to support the turtle tunnel project? We’d be very grateful! Contact us at the HQ at 6712 Gelert Road in Haliburton, at 705 -457-1222 or [email protected] (Thanks to EcoKare, Kari Gunson for the tunnel installation and use-by-turtle photos and to ECCC Community Nominated Priority Places Project for supporting this project) See more
