Just a little warning regarding the Xmas treat many stores are now starting to stock for dogs at xmas. Many of these so called treats end up with the dog "enjoy...ing" some time in a veterinary surgery over Christmas. The vast majority of these rawhide products and treats come from China. The chews are made from cattle or horse hides and their journey starts with the hides being soaked in a toxic sodium sulphide to remove the hair and fat. More chemicals are used in order to split the hide into layers which is then washed with hydrogen peroxide to give the white "pure" look and remove the rancid smell. Now comes the pretty festive colours and the glue to form cute shapes. On testing, these chews have shown traces of arsenic, mercury, chromium and formaldehyde. If that wasn't bad enough, they regularly cause intestinal blockages, poisoning from chemical residue and choking. The chews go slippery when wet and are near impossible to get hold of to save a choking dog. Leave them in the shop where they belong or if some well meaning person buys them for your dog put them safely away for later, then dispatch in the bin! Please be safe with your dogs!

Want to know why rescues ask so many questions before approving you to adopt? Take a look at Davey and Max. Both these guys have found themselves back with Prec...ious Paws after being returned by their adopters. While we do understand that some adoptions just won’t work out (it happens) please, please, PLEASE be 100% honest with yourself before applying to adopt a dog. Ask yourself how committed you are to making it work. Ask yourself how long you’ll give for resident pets to adjust to a new dog. Ask yourself what you’ll do when things aren’t perfect right away. How much time will you allow this dog to decompress? How much are you willing to invest in time and money for training? How serious are you when applying to adopt? . We don’t say this to shame people, we say this because we can only ask so many questions. We need you to have a good talk with yourself too before completing that adoption application. . As for Max and Davey, they’re decompressing in their foster homes. We know their true forever homes are out there and we’ll be here for them for as long as they need. . . #thisisrescue #thehardpart #preciouspawsfamily #ontariodogrescue #simcoecounty See more

On Wednesday night we were asked to take this beautiful girl into rescue. Sahara has a fractured hind leg that requires surgery and she’s only 8 months old. She... was about to be euthanized and obviously we couldn’t let that happen! Sahara is now safe with one of our awesome foster families while she awaits surgery next Tuesday. She has the sweetest personality so far which is good because she has many weeks of recovery ahead of her! Between the emergency clinic visit for radiographs, a splint and overnight visit, her surgery on Tuesday and all the follow up care and recheck radiographs, this girl is going to cost quite a bit of money! Please consider making a tax deductible donation through our website to help Sahara; https://www.preciouspawsrescue.ca/how-you-can-help/donate/ See more

*************People with pets:**************** In this current COVID-19 pandemic, veterinary hospitals are NOT considered an essential service. What this means ...is you need to take every single precaution you can to protect your pet from needing veterinary medical services. I am not talking to the pet owners who have pets with chronic illnesses, I’m talking to the ones who’s pets may suffer an acute sudden illness or injury. Because if the government forces us to shut down, there will not be any veterinary doctors, nurses, support staff, surgeons, specialists, or emergency facilities open to help you. Not even humane euthanasia will be accessible and I have already seen one case this week that an owner was not allowed to be present during their pet’s euthanasia due to social distancing protocols. With everyone social distancing and staying home, we’re going to be spending a lot of time with our pets. We’re going to want to take them to dog parks, off-leash hikes, feed them lots of snacks, and our kids are going to be home throwing food and other objects that sometimes our silly pets don’t realize is not food. We need to keep our highly energetic dogs on a leash and pace their exercise there might not be a veterinary surgeon to fix their torn cruciate ligament or a critical care specialist to monitor your pet if they run out into traffic and get hit by a car. Dog parks are dog bite central even IF our dog is the nice one. There may not be anyone available to stitch up that bite wound, which can become severely infected. There may not be access to antibiotics to fight this infection. Consider indoor training activities or tennis courts at night with no other pets. Learn how your dog likes to play and adapt. Don’t feed your pet high-fat treats, human food, or any new treats there will not be anyone to treat your pet for their potential pancreatitis which fatty foods can trigger. There may not be a hospital to put your pet on IV fluids, there won’t be pain medications, and there won’t be anything to help your pet from their suffering. Watch your kiddos for dropping objects, toys, fatty foods on the floor you wouldn’t believe how many pairs of socks, underwear, string, even the head of a spatula I’ve seen either vomited up, or surgically removed from an animal’s digestive tract. Obstructed bowels can lead to death please keep your eyes and ears open. And lastly, bring your outdoor cats inside if possible. Bring them into the garage. Remove any rat poison, antifreeze or toxins that they can get into. Outdoor cats are so vulnerable to the environment, to cars, raccoons, foxes and other things, we need to keep them safe. This is not a complete list obviously, but this is a common theme for emergent situations. We must do our best to protect our pets in this time as veterinary hospitals can be ordered closed down any day.

WARNING!!! WARNING!!!WARNING!!! These tennis balls may be causing serious injury to your dogs !!! 3 of our dogs and one boarder appear to have had reactions in ...their mouths, throats, tongues , esophagus and gums after playing with this brand of Penn balls. Symptoms are swollen tongue, white ulcerations, heavy drooling, difficulty in drinking , eating or breathing. Several of the dogs required IV's because of the pain caused while drinking and eating. Several vets have described the ulcers as 'chemical burns'. The balls here were purchased at Costco. But similar balls are sold at many retailers. If anyone knows a dog, has a dog or heard a similar story please share it here. We can't be the only ones with this issue.
