COVID-19/HEALTH/WELLNESS--Update on Nova Scotia's COVID-19 Immunization Plan ---------------------------------------------------------------- Nova Scotia is building a strategic, flexible immunization plan with over a million doses of COVID-19 vaccine - enough for more than 500,000 people - expected to arrive in the province over the next six months. New vaccination clinics will start in several parts of Nova Scotia this month:...Continue reading

The following is a statement from Nova Scotia PC leader Tim Houston regarding politicians travelling abroad during the pandemic: If any of my Caucus colleagues had left the country during the pandemic to vacation, to sit on a beach, to visit family or do any of the things that Canadians have been told not to do, they would immediately be removed from our caucus. There is no grey area. Elected officials should not only set an example, but should work hard to raise the standard.... And no leader should look the other way and allow a handful of ignorant, entitled politicians to act above the rules that every Canadian has been asked to respect. For the better part of a year, Canadians have been asked - week in and week out - to make sacrifices to stop COVID-19. They had to cancel weddings, they were kept from visiting parents in long-term care homes, they often couldn’t visit sick loved ones and they were isolated when it was time to grieve. So when the same people who tell you to make sacrifices are unwilling to make them themselves, Canadians have a right to be ticked off. I know I am. Everyone has had to make sacrifices and politicians should set the example, rather than thinking they are the exception to the rule. If that’s too much to ask, there are plenty of other jobs they can do instead.

A group of concerned citizens from Grand River to Fourchu have been meeting weekly for 6 weeks now to advocate for the resurfacing of the St. Peters-Fourchu Road that connects their communities together and is a significant part of the Fleur de Lis Trail. I attended my first meeting with the Fleur De Lis St. Peters Fourchu Road group on November 16th. I was impressed with the dedication and organization of the group from the start. Safety of the road is obviously the number... one priority of the group, but they also recognize the importance of the road for major economic drivers in the region (Tourism, Fisheries, Forestry to name a few). I felt it was important for the PC Party of Nova Scotia to understand the issues so I invited Tim Houston to the meeting this past week. Tim graciously made time to meet with the group via zoom, and the group did a great job of presenting the issues to him. Tim was in turn able to outline how the Party could be of assistance. Brian Comer, MLA for Sydney River-Mira-Louisburg was also able to attend via zoom. Former MLA Alfie MacLeod was there in person and has been a regular attendee at the meetings and has been a great support for them. Supporting community groups and organizations will be a priority for me as MLA for Richmond!! You can help the group by signing the petition that the group is sending to the NS Legislature in the spring sitting.

Progressive Conservative leader Tim Houston reacts to the new loan for large tourism operators: October 16, 2020 The local coffee shop, the diner up the street, your favourite place to hear live music; the Mom and Pop shops that make up the fabric of our province are struggling. Small and Medium sized businesses, the backbone of the economy in Nova Scotia, are in survival mode and have been met - to date - with no government... support. Unfortunately, with today’s announcement, there is absolutely no help for them. They have been patiently waiting to hear that help is on the way, only to find out today that they continue to be left behind. Since life started to resume back to normal post COVID-19, I have been travelling from one end of the province to the other, and I have seen first-hand the pressure that small and medium size businesses are under. They have been barely surviving under extremely challenging circumstances. In some cases, families have been building up their businesses for generations, poured life savings into their operations and are now genuinely worried that they may not survive. It’s great that the Liberals are finally acknowledging - in the middle of October - that Nova Scotia's tourism industry has been impacted, but an announcement that may only bring relief to companies whose head offices aren’t even in Nova Scotia is not comforting. Time and time again, the McNeil Liberals have introduced grants that are too narrow to help Nova Scotians. When the money isn’t used, they put it towards announcing another ‘new’ grant. I don’t need to remind the Liberals that the tourism industry brought in $2.6 billion dollars in revenue in 2019, a figure that the Premier quite frequently has claimed as a victory of his. It’s unfortunate that his government has now abandoned the industry. The government needs to start listening to small and medium businesses and those in the industry to find solutions to save our tourism sector. One suggestion, put forward by the PC Caucus in May, would have seen every Nova Scotian receive a tax deduction to be put to use towards our tourism sector: restaurants, hotels, museums, arts and culture activities. It’s time for the government to heed ideas and solutions that would have actually helped the entire industry including small, medium and large. This industry is too important to Nova Scotia. -30- See more

In the short few months I have been making my rounds throughout Richmond County, Health Care has been the number one issue brought to my attention. During a Pandemic, it makes sense to me to have adequate Mental Health and Addictions supports in our communities!! There is no timeline for re-introduction of services in our community and it has been closed since March!! Other facilities are open across the Province!! This service is needed now more then ever!! Please share and I encourage you to voice your concerns!!

Sarah and I had a great day on Saturday touring around Richmond County. We started out at The Clairestone Inn In Arichat with a delicious breakfast, visited a bit on Isle Madame and then took the tour through St.Peters and made our way to Fourchu. We finished off the day in L'Ardoise at Blueberry Fest! It was a great day to be out and about and was nice to chat with some people throughout the riding!! #richmond, #campaign, #NSPC

Here is my family carrying on the tradition of raising the Terry Fox flag for the event in Port Hawkesbury. 40 years later we are continuing the Marathon of Hope! I hope you can make time in your day to do something (walk, bike, hike, run) in his honour or for family and friends who struggle or have struggled in the fight against Cancer.

When my wife and moved back home 12 years ago we went to the annual Terry Fox Run in town. We were 2 of the 4 participants in the run that year. A friend of ours, Rilla McLean had to organize it at the last minute. It was important to Rilla as she met Terry at the Causeway during his Marathon of Hope. Sarah and decided on that run that we would organize it the next year. One year has turned into 11 for Sarah. Every year we see people of all ages at our event to remember Terry and raise money for the Foundation. It will be different this year but watch for us on Sunday morning when we raise the flag in Terry’s honor at the Civic Centre (hopefully live on Facebook)

I was extremely pleased that Tim Houston, leader of the PC Party of Nova Scotia, made it a priority to visit Richmond County soon after I became the PC Candidate for the Riding. On Aug 22nd, we spent the day travelling around the County so that I could give him a sense of what makes our communities work. We were able to visit with local businesses, community groups and residents throughout the day. Tim committed to returning to visit our riding again soon to spend more time g...eting to know us better!! Adam Cooke, from Telile 24/7 interviewed Tim and I at the Marina in St. Peter's. I encourage you to watch the interview as it gives you a short glimpse of who we both are and some of the opportunities we see for our region in the future. Thanks again to the Marina for allowing us to have the interview on location and I think Adam did a great job on the interview!! #NSPCParty, #Richmond
