Thinking about racing virtually? Rule 1 - Don't let the hubs trip over your cords and disconnect you like Mirinda Carfare Rule 2 - Take advice from club member Sara Thanks Sara for writing this piece for us.... Need some motivation to keep training? Why not try a Virtual Race? Ironman Virtual Racing is free and it provides incentive to keep moving. This past weekend I participated in my first Ironman Virtual Race VR2, which consisted of a 3k run, a 40k bike and a 10k Run. I chose to run a flat 10k outdoors on Saturday and rode 40k virtually on an app called Rouvy on Sunday followed by a flat 3k run outdoors. I found the Boulder 5150 virtual bike course on Rouvy quite challenging starting with a gradual 11k climb followed by a fun descent and then a few rollers sporadically to the finish. Overall a fun experience to bring in some friendly, household competition between Rob and I. The nice thing is the Ironman VR races can be performed any time, any order, indoors or outdoors from the established start date and time to the established end date and time. To register for an Ironman Virtual Race, login to your existing Ironman account or register with Ironman.com and create your profile to sync your wearable device app with your Ironman Virtual Club Dashboard. To connect app, click settings, then manage my apps and select your application, https://www.ironmanvirtualclub.com. Once Sport Heroes pops up, authorize as this is Ironman’s dashboard. When signing up for the race it takes you to Active.com where you register as if you were signing up for a normal race. After registering for a virtual race it’s time to decide how to perform your race. If you’re looking for a virtual riding app several options exist one being Rouvy as it has become more visible since it partnered with Ironman providing real Ironman courses, several with real life videos. In addition to video of the terrain, Rouvy also features a nice profile of elevation and coloured training zones indicating level of intensity along the bottom of the screen. This was quite helpful in knowing what was coming up. Another popular virtual app called Zwift features timed hill climbs or loops, leaderboards, jerseys to win, levels to achieve and more with a fee. There were significantly less riders on Rouvy as its not as popular or interactive as Zwift however easier to stay with a riding partner virtually. Either way there are options to explore for virtual riding and racing. Hope you have a positive experience and stay connected to the triathlon and running community!
