Around 80% of premature heart disease and stroke can be prevented by establishing healthy habits, including healthy eating. We can all benefit from making healthy dietary choices to protect our heart health. Here are some heart healthy food tips recommended by our Registered Dietitians to include in your daily meal planning: Have 7+ servings of vegetables and fruits every day. A serving can look like cup of raw vegetables, cup of cooked leafy vegetables or 1 fruit (banana..., apple, or orange). For more information around serving sizes, click here. Making soups and stews during these colder months are also an easy way to incorporate vegetables into your diet. Have protein every day! Proteins are not limited to animal protein, some other sources include tofu, chickpeas, quinoa, nuts and seeds. Adding protein to your daily meals can be easy. Try substituting white rice for quinoa, dip your veggies in hummus instead of dressing, or even snacking on roasted chickpeas instead of chips! Include small amounts of healthy, unsaturated fats into your meals. Some examples are olive oil, pecans, fish, flaxseeds, and avocados. Try snacking on a handful of pecans, or using olive oil with balsamic vinegar for salad dressing. You can also add flaxseeds into your smoothies for some extra healthy fats to support your health. Include foods that are high in fiber. Dietary fiber can help with cardiovascular health by lowering cholesterol. Lentils, oats and chia seeds are great sources of dietary fiber. Consider having overnight oats with chia seeds for breakfast or making lentil stew for dinner. Curious to learn more about healthy meal options? I never in my wildest dreams thought I would be finishing my final year of medical school in a pandemic. Here are some things I have experienced in my very shor...t time thus far: 1. People coming into hospital far later and sicker than needed because they are afraid due to Covid. Dont wait, please come. 2. People very sick and suffering, lonely and sometimes dying alone due to family not being able to be with them. This breaks my heart. I have cried quiet tears to myself on many occasions. 3. Funerals delayed due to Covid and the extra grief and stress this causes on families. Not being able to properly mourn a life well lived is terrible. 4. An increase in mental health and distress coming into the ER, young and old alike. We need to reach out and check in on each other. 5. An increase in stress and anxiety Covid related issues coming into the family medicine office. Teachers afraid to go to school, workers fearing going to work due to lack of precautions in the workplace 6. Young, otherwise healthy people getting sick and in some cases dying due to Covid. Our long term care homes being decimated in some cases and losing our elderly sooner than need be. 2020 will eventually end and 2021 will begin, but we will still have Covid 19. This is just a reminder that as tiring and exhausting as this pandemic is in many ways, this is a key time for us all to stay vigilant and protect others, especially the vulnerable. Take care of yourselves, take care of each other and when you find you don't want to care anymore, think about someone you know who is vulnerable and at risk and do it for them. This is a marathon, not a sprint, but we will endure and get through it together.
