Ex Machina - Ava's Transformation (Rescore by Jesse Woolston) After watching Ex Machina in 2015, there was one scene that stood out relating to AI, machines, a...nd eventually how the human form is blended together and perceptived. Towards the end of the film, Ava "completes" her transformation and realizes what she has become. This immediatly struck me as a tender moment that highlights not just the singularity concept but how the lines are blurred between man and machine. Today, we are reliant on technology which is a social indicator that the idea of "cyborgs" and greater machine intergration is not too far off our understanding. The film was directed by #AlexGarland and scored by #GeoffBarrow & #BenSalisbury. Their material was so good, I chose to approach the music without their musical influence, creating a different mood. The main idea was to follow along with the narrative of transformation between machine and man while maintaining the constant blending of the two. While the perceptions of Ava end up being human, she is still a machine. Re-score breakdown: The scene opens with Ava discovering the closets that contain the different machine versions and skins. The music was designed to unsettle the viewer and create mystery as the actions that led up to this point were in rebellion which now move into discovery. The sound design represents the complex mixing of technology, machine, and the tenderness that comes with human nature. Beginning much more abrasive in timbre, the mood lifts into a lighter texture that finally ends with a soft, "pure" sense of humanity. The beauty in humanity are the dynamics, non-binary processes, and empathy. Throughout the re-score, the music maintains a blend between technology/electronics and traditional, human instruments. The sounds were made from synthesizers, strings, kalimbas, and pads that evolve and are slowly stripped away to emphasize the most human elements. One thing to note, all of the sounds were processed to create a deeper blend between these two concepts. If I started with an organic instrument (Kalimba as an example), I would then process it in a very "technological" way. The same idea goes for the electronic synthesizers. They were augmented with natural reverbs and effects that place them in real world scenario's to create a more organic feeling. I hope you enjoy the scene and my summary of my approach :) The scenes with nudity have been motion tracked and blurred to stay in-line with the facebook community guidelines. Jesse

Some Saturday night AR projection experiments with the new SMODE V8 + HeavyM Live. Yes, I'm controlling all that on my cell phone through Open sound control! SMODE's OSC integration and adaptive learning are by far the best I have ever messed with. Soooo much potential with this stuff!
