Announcement on 2020-21 Season Starting October 30th & Other Important Information Below (Please share!) Hello to our fans, and everyone in the Pirates comm...unity! We are excited to announce that the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League is going ahead this season, with games starting October 30, 2020. That Friday, your Strait Pirates will host the Eskasoni Eagles at the Civic Centre to start our 56th season! (In addition, we will be hosting an exhibition game against the Kameron Miners on October 23, 2020 at 7pm. Admission for the exhibition game will be $5 per person, and there will be a limit of 200 fans permitted to attend. We will need to take names and phone numbers from all who attend, and other Covid-19 protocols, such as mask requirements, will be in place.) There will be some changes to the schedule this season. Rather than a 32-game regular season, the league has approved a 20-game schedule, with each team playing within it’s own division. This will be followed by a regular playoff schedule. The Pirates are a membership-based organization, and we are inviting input from our fans on some important questions, in order to make this season a positive experience for all of us. Public Health has restricted gatherings of fans to 200 for now. We are fortunate to have one of the best facilities in the league, and we will be seeking permission from NS Public Health to increase that capacity, potentially to 400, which appears possible where you can create 'zones' with separate entrances and washroom facilities. We will need to determine how to allocate what might be a limited number of tickets, and we invite input from fans and members as to how best to do so. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, many places are limiting attendance to season ticket holders, and that is something we are considering as well. Members, sponsors, and those campers who purchased season passes at our Pirate Conditioning Camp will be prioritized for admission. Your Board of Directors has always aimed to keep our membership fees low, especially for our younger fans, and we want to continue to do so. Last year, membership fees were $100 for adults and $50 for students. Membership includes a season pass for regular season and playoff games, (which is a very good deal). We are only able to keep those fees low thanks to our amazing sponsors! The business community in Port Hawkesbury and throughout the Strait Region have been incredible supporters, and it is great to have these businesses recognize the importance of the Pirates as a team, and the gatherings for Pirate home games, to the social fabric of the community. Each year, we normally have our Annual General Meeting after the end of the season. This year, due to the pandemic and not knowing whether there would even be a season, we held off until now. The AGM is scheduled for October 28th at 7pm at the Civic Centre. We will also be making it available on Zoom for anyone who wishes to join that way. An important part of preparing for a season is refreshing our Board, and our volunteer base. As a membership-based organization, we are only as strong as our off-ice team, and it is important to have new members join and take part. This is YOUR team, and everybody’s opinion matters. Please consider helping out, and a big thank you to our current Board and volunteers who do such a fantastic job!
