As I cast about for words, I'm like a fisher at a pond - some days, I throw a net, and the haul is plentiful - word after word, ... ready to share with those around me (after sufficient seasoning and cooking, of course!); but other days, I've a line and a pole, and my practiced actions do nothing to catch the attention of those fickle swimmers, and I wander home, wondering what I've got in the pantry, that we might share together. My prayers are often like that. Some days they are best left swimming in the lake of God's love, living their being, uncaptured by me - a school of tiny prayers, like smelt running in the moonlight, or that great grandmother of a prayer, sturgenoning along. Happy Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Tuesday), but why do we celebrate it? The word shrove is the past tense of shrive, which means to confess. In the Middle Ages, this day was a time for people to confess their sins and ask forgiveness for them. This allowed Christians to enter into the season of Lent and prepare for Easter with a clean spirit. Pope St. Gregory prohibited Christians from eating all forms of meat and animal products during Lent around A.D. 600. He told St. Augustine... of Canterbury, a founder of the Christian church in southern England, to enforce those same fasting rules in England. So Christians made pancakes to use up their supply of eggs, milk and butter in preparation for Lent. Enjoy your pancakes! See more
