The Round Goby’s (Neogobius melanostomus) aggressive habits and rapid spread have had serious negative impacts on native species across Ontario. These invaders,... first introduced to the Great Lakes in the early 90s, have reduced populations of sportfish by eating their eggs, their young, and competing for food and habitat. To prevent the spread of Round Goby, never use them as bait. It is against the law to use Round Goby as bait or have a live Round Goby in your possession. With more than 20 different species in North America, distinguishing one duck from another at a distance can be tricky. While you wait for your fall issue of Conservator Magazine to arrive, check out this past article with helpful hints for identification in the wild.

Conserve: a word we’d add to this year’s World Food Day theme of Grow, Nourish, Sustain. Together. Because by partnering with Canadian farmers, we’re finding mutually-beneficial ways for wetland and grassland habitat to share the land with food production.

The fall season to hunt Black Bear is currently open in most parts of Ontario . In addition to the mandatory harvest report, successful Ontario Bear hunters are... asked to submit two premolars to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry for aging . The rings in the root of the tooth, just like the rings of a tree - indicate the age of the bear . This helps biologists determine the age structure of Ontario’s Bear population . Hunters play a key role in managing healthy wildlife populations . #conservation #fallbearhunt #foresttotable See more

Starting in 2021 moose tags will be awarded using a points-based allocation process. In this process, we will not set the required amount of points to be awarde...d for each tag type. This will be determined by the points held by the applicants for each tag type and the number of tags available. Starting in 2022, we will publish the minimum point total that was awarded each tag type in the previous year. If a hunter’s point total is equal to or larger than the minimum points awarded the same tag type in the previous year, they will be likely, but not guaranteed, to be awarded that tag type. To learn more about how moose tags will be distributed to resident hunters next year, visit: Ontario.ca/moosetagprocess
