Happy New Year! Attention all equine clients We are proud to present our new company Troy Equine Services. Veterinarians, staff and phone numbers remain the same. The only change you need to note is the email - now [email protected]. An introductory email was sent to all equine clients. Please let us know if you didn’t receive it. Looking forward to seeing you in 2021!

Provincial Lockdown - we’re on it!! Restrictions have become a little tighter. We are now limited to 2 clients in our new reception area. Those allowed in must be here for reasons that concern the immediate health and welfare of your pet. Of course masks must be worn and a daily COVID questionnaire filled out. Those here for routine reasons like pedicures, drop offs for routine surgeries and dental cleanings must go back to curb side. We have opened a drop off/pick up window for medication and food pick ups. Maybe even a cat carrier or small dog! All services remain available. We will get through this together!!

What lockdown means for Troy Vet - We are essential and remain open. Our new reception area is now limited to 5 people and has lots of room for social distancing. Please only one person with each patient so we can accommodate everyone. Of course Janet counts as 1! Please wear a mask... Please fill in the self assessment at the door. For EQUINE calls - please wear a mask. Please maintain social distance and limit the number of people in the examination area. We may hold your horse for the exam and treatment. Please self assess before considering sharing space with us. Really this is not very different than what we are already doing. We wish to remain safe while working so that we may continue to treat your animals!!

The new waiting room and reception is now open for clients! There are a few finishing touches to go but that’s the fun part! Our seating pods provide three socially distanced waiting areas - keeping people and pets safe and happy.

Phoenix - a favourite patient of ours was the first patient to walk through the new clinic door!! He is the notorious shishka-dog who had an 8 shishkabob stick removed from his stomach, he has had immune mediated disease and suffers from anxiety - especially afraid of wind shield wipers so can’t travel in the rain without his meds. And he’s always hungry!! He has definitely earned the right of first dog through the new door!!

One of our patients had some very special treatment at the Ontario Veterinary College this past week. This 22 year old Haflinger had a head CT scan to help determine the cause of his copious, foul smelling nasal discharge. Was it a tooth root abscess, a tumour or something else? Results turned up nothing sinister and a primary sinusitis was thought to be the cause. He stayed for a few days to have his sinuses flushed out and is doing very well.

How clean is your water trough? Making sure your horse has access to clean drinking water is important year round, but especially so in this heat. We are also in Potomac Horse Fever season. This bacterial infection is spread by mayflies and other aquatic insects. Dr Stephanie is out treating our first case of the year now. PHF is treatable if caught early, but if left untreated it leads to dehydration and can be fatal. Monitor your horses for signs of lethargy, diarrhea and a fever and be sure to give us a call if your horse seems 'off' or if you are interested in the vaccine or more information.
