I just read an interesting article where a lady was spending a lot of time telling her dad that they had to keeping using more new and ...modern genetics to update their breeding and marketing program. Then they went to a couple sales of all new and modern genetics and both sales didnt go very well. She asked him why. He simply stated that just because they are new genetics with fancy records doesnt mean they are good. What he is saying is not enough attention to detail with structure and phenotype and bone and feet. I went through this in cattle business. Everyone wanted to breed to the hot show champion because he was a champion and marketing would get easier. Well its sometimes the same philosophy with horses Many people are breeding for performance records and color and whatever reason Not many people breed for the good of the animal. By this i mean are we breeding that stud to a mare for better bone or feet or structure or type. I have met a lot of people over the years who are multipliers and some who are true breeders. I am not saying new genetics are wrong and old genetics are better. What i believe is not many people breed to improve the animals. We have all been somewhat guilty of this and some figure it out quicker than others and some never get it.. My belief is i want to combine genotype with phenotype and if there is color for me its a bonus but mostly just want to raise good ones regardless of an old or new pedigree.
