I observed that all of my patients who overeat all skip breakfast and/or lunch. How can we be surprised by them overeating later, really? At the end of the day, it is all about moderation. If you are eating a healthy diet 80% of the time, and allow yourself to indulge 20% of the time, this will not make you an unhealthy person. It is all about balance! Last but not least: your weight does not determine health status. Just because someone may weigh more than you, it does not ...mean you are healthier than them. We are so afraid of not being good enough that we focus on being thin as a way to make us feel successful and good enough. Indeed, many feels that being overweight or obese means that that person is ‘unhealthy’ or ‘unsuccessful’ because of their lacking in will power etc. But we all agree that food is like air, necessary for our survival. So how could one’s willpower ever be stronger than one’s survival instinct. So, if I can’t diet, how can I lose weight? Throw away the diets! It’s time to adopt a healthy, balanced lifestyle, and focus on mindful eating and eating often. I often tell my patients that they need to eat more in order to lose weight. Eat better. When you are not hungry, it is easier to turn down the cookies/cheetos/smarties/easter eggs. You see? It is easier to be mindful and eat slowly when you are not starving to start. Air is like food. Try to hold your breath too ...long. When you come out of the water after being caught by a massive wave, you catch up on breathing by hyperventilating. Right? Same thing will happen if you go into famine. Once the food is available again, you will hyper eat. (Called hyperphagia, actually) After famine, rats will go for the peanut butter and nutella over their rat pellets. Eating mindfully also means that it’s important to focus on the natural cues that our bodies have been designed to give us. This means listening to when your body is hungry and full, and following these cues through what you eat. This concept may sound very simple, but most people do not follow their natural hunger cues, and end up overeating causing weight gain. It is also important to adopt a healthy, balanced diet. This means instead of restricting yourself from eating ‘bad foods’, let yourself eat the foods you love as well! Does the Perfect Weight Loss Diet Exist? Have you been trying diet after diet without being able to get to your goal weight? Do you feel amazing when you are on a diet, lose weight, but then gain it all back after it ends? This never ending cycle is called yo-yo dieting. The frustrating truth is that when people diet, calories are restricted, and your body adapts to diets the same way it would adapt to starvation. This means that you will hold onto weight because your body th...inks it needs to survive this ‘starvation’. So, in almost all cases, people actually gain weight when they go on diets. Studies show that even though most people can lose weights on diets, they gain it all back once it is over, and then some. So on average, we end up weighing MORE after dieting! The real truth is, the perfect weight-loss diet does not exist. In fact, weight-loss diets do not work at all. Period. Do not be fooled by what food and fitness gurus on social media are trying to sell you, or trying to get you to click on, going on a diet will not help you lose weight. Quite the contrary.
