SPC Member @justacivvy discusses metadata and the importance of not dropping digital breadcrumbs for people to find and follow in today’s #FastFax - We’ve discussed metadata previously. That is, the data about data. The geo-tagging from a picture. What device a video was filmed on. Etc. We talked about how posting unscrubbed content to social media can give away a lot of information about ourselves to the social media platform and, sometimes, other users of the platform (Parler incident). Today we will look at the metadata from other file types such as word documents (.docx), PowerPoints (.ppt), and spreadsheets (.xlsx). For these examples, I searched for each file type on Google and used the words lock picking as our subject. This gave me a word document about lock picking, a PowerPoint about lock picking, and a spreadsheet that mentioned lock picking. I ran each file type through a metadata program and screenshot the results as you can see in the following slides. Data extracted from each file includes: who created the file, who last edited the file, when the file was created, how long was spent editing the file, the program used to create the file, and much more information. This example illustrates that metadata is not just relevant to pictures and videos, but to many file types. As always let’s be careful about what we post online. Think about these examples before you submit that college presentation that may end up on the public .edu website. Consider scrubbing your file as best you can before loading that helpful .pdf to your small business website. All data leaves a trail. . #tradecraft #infosec #opsec #security #communications
