SESSION ONE: Frustrated spouse: I don’t think I can handle this marriage anymore. There doesn’t seem to be any sense to staying together. Therapist: I understa...nd how difficult relationships can be...and especially one as intimate as that of a husband and wife. Why don’t you tell me what you’ve already tried to do. Frustrated spouse: Well, talking doesn’t help, and we tried a holiday but all we did was argue. It’s like walking on eggshells! Therapist: Yes, when the communication breaks down, even the most innocent comment can be interpreted as confrontational. How about we spend some time discussing all the ways we can rebuild what is broken and then make a plan to get you both that closeness you truly want. Frustrated spouse: Okay, that sounds good! Therapist: Wonderful! Tell me what you’re feeling right now. Frustrated spouse: Knowing there is a way to effectively deal with this situation is a relief. I’m feeling something I haven’t felt before...hopeful! What a great feeling. Therapist: I’m so glad! The other day I went out for a walk to take in the beautiful Fall colours. I always marvel at how something like the dying of leaves can hold such beauty...and ...even it’s own aroma! Life is like that. There are changes happening in every area of our lives and how we deal with those changes will determine whether we will reap from them or not.
