#MeettheTutor with Rony! Look at this very real advice. Tutors everywhere can relate! Writing Challenge: I used to write so many long, interminable sentences. I guess I was under the impression that longer sentences would make my essay sound smarter than they are. (haha) Tutor Solution: Since I began working as a tutor, I kept seeing people writing long sentences and I kept saying to them: Make it shorter. Obviously, I had to do the same thing too. So, I took my own advice and broke my sentences into simpler, shorter but clearer sentences.

This week our spotlight tutor is Julye-Anne. Here’s her writing story: Writing Challenge: Writing a strong thesis statement. Tutor Solution: She thinks of theses like math equations. Writing a good thesis statement means making sure all the variables (eg. claim and main points of theme) are included. #TRUWritingCentre #TRUStudentlife #mytru #MeettheTutor

Did you our post a few weeks ago on base words? And now you’re curious about root words? Root words are base words of Latin or Greek origin that do not make words by themselves in English. Find more info here: http://ow.ly/Vr1a50BZaa7 #myTRU #TRUStudentLife #TRUWritingCentre

Believe it or not, tutors experience stress when it comes to academic writing, too! Each of the Writing Centre tutors has encountered challenges, but has found innovative ways to make their writing better. Writing Challenge: Ben used to begin a lot of his sentences with coordinating conjunctions like and, but, and so. Tutor Solution: To fix this, he memorized the acronym FANBOYS (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) and has used them sparingly ever since. As a bonus, since the purpose of coordinating conjunctions is to connect sentences, it's also really helped with his sentence flow! #Meetthetutor #mytru #trustudentlife #writingcentre
