Although the City of Calgary has improved somewhat in how it does it's zoning/urban development over the past decade, most of the suburbs and even some inner city neighborhoods are still far from ideal. If you are looking to have a better understanding of why this is, I would highly recommend the video below: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnKIVX968PQ&t=316s

Happy Canada Day to all those who call this great country home. As we add one more year may we all remember to take some time to look back at this country's unique national and regional histories. Here are some pictures I've taken from across the country in the past , hopefully I'll have an opportunity to add to them in the years to come (especially from out East). HAPPY CANADA DAY!

Earlier today , the City of Calgary posted a Tweet (see below) concerning potential large gatherings during tomorrow's Canada Day celebrations. Unfortunately, this request will fall on deaf ears for many due to the inconsistent enforcement of this very same policy three weeks ago when thousands of people participated in the BLM protests but the city administration choose to be silent. This double standard will further cause a rift between City Hall and an important segment of the citizenry.

Although it is good to see the City trying to enter the 21st century when it comes to accessibility, this new app does not address the biggest flaw with our public transportation, the flat rate of a ticket. It is illogical and a disincentive to charge someone the same price for a ticket regardless if he takes the bus for 2 stops or for a tour of the city. This causes many Calgarians to avoid taking public transport for short to medium distances. I will check out the new app ...when it comes out but I must point out that cities like Singapore , countries like Germany and the Netherlands have had much better ticketing systems for years if not decades and I simply don`t understand why our city does not emulate those success stories, instead of trying to reinvent the wheel. In fact, I know why , as per usual the City is looking for the cheaper option and as a result Calgarians will get an inferior experience. PS. The city should at least offer the digital tickets/passes at a discount as an incentive for those who adopt the new system. https://livewirecalgary.com//calgary-transits-myfare-elec/

As someone who has run for public office I can tell you that there are more than just ONE big mistake in the UCP's Election Amendment Act, here are some: - It does not change our electoral system from First Past the Post <-- this is a horrible system it often gets people elected with a plurality of votes , not a majority. A ranked ballot voting system would result in healthier majority support for the wining candidate. - It does not put a maximum amount on how much a candida...te can spend in their campaign. If you look at most of the Councillors who won their seats in 2017, they had spent over 100,000$ ; some spending over 200K or even 300K. There should be a cap no larger than 50,000$ , let each candidate demonstrate how good they are with their money. https://www.calgary.ca//2017-Disclosure-of-Campaign-Financ - The ability to spend up to 5000$ per candidate while having the option to do this for multiple candidates only benefits the wealthy. Here the mayor is correct : "If we're really interested in taking money out of politics, that $5,000 limit should be lowered to $2,000 or even $1,000 and make the candidates work for that money," - The lack of transparency in not being obligated to disclose your donors is horrible, people should know who is supporting what candidate and by how much. - Although there are other issues , the lack of engagement with the public (besides an online portal that took place in February) is by far the worse thing that this bill has going for it. This bill and the UCP does not support improving our local democracy , it makes it worse. https://www.cbc.ca//calgary-mayor-naheed-nenshi-campaign-f
