Industry Giants Commit to Transparent Reporting of Shipping Emissions A group of the world’s largest energy, agriculture, mining, and commodity trading companies will for the first time assess and disclose the climate alignment of their shipping activities. A standard greenhouse gas emissions reporting process will simplify some of the complexities often associated with reporting. It will encourage a more transparent and consistent approach to tracking emissions, which will ...be a critical part of making shipping more sustainable, says Jan Dieleman, President, Cargill Ocean Transportation and Chair of the Sea Cargo Charter drafting group. The shipping industry as a whole needs to adopt a transparent approach, advocated by the Sea Cargo Charter, in order to fully understand the sector’s overall greenhouse gas footprint and for us to collectively rise to the challenges faced, says Rasmus Bach Nielsen, Global Head Fuel Decarbonisation, Trafigura. WCO Secretary General addresses the 7th Annual Meeting of International Organisations on Facing the Global COVID-19 Crisis Together The 7th Annual Meeting of International Organisations of the Partnership for effective international rulemaking took place as a virtual meeting in September 2020. Eighteen Heads of International Organisations including the WCO Secretary General, Dr. Kunio Mikuriya, participated in the High-Level Webinar on International Organisations and their M...embers Facing the Global Crisis Together. During his presentation, the WCO Secretary General described the pragmatic approach taken by the WCO and its 183 Member Customs administrations to ensure the continued movement of goods by safeguarding supply chains. In order to facilitate critical trade, the WCO, working closely with the World Health Organization, had published a list of medical supplies and medicines together with their corresponding Harmonized System (HS) classification codes. Dr. Mikuriya pointed out that in order to address the challenges regarding cooperation with other government agencies at the border and to prevent gridlock in supply chains, the WCO had teamed up with relevant public and private international organisations to undertake joint actions, including issuing joint statements and letters to remind Customs, other border agencies and the transport sector to enhance cooperation based on existing standards and guidelines. In this way, the pandemic crisis offered unprecedented opportunities to strengthen collaboration among relevant international organisations. In conclusion, the Secretary General called upon the international community to turn the challenges caused by the pandemic or other crises into opportunities for collaborating with public and private international organisations. AsiaEurope trade records first volume growth of 2020 AsiaEurope container volume in July recorded its first month of year-over-year growth since October 2019, rising almost 2 percent, according to the latest data from Container Trades Statistics (CTS). The demand on the trade lane has been improving steadily since the COVID-19 lockdowns of April and May, and the 1.9 percent growth in July took volume to 1.52 million TEU.... There was also an improvement on a global scale in July, when the volume was virtually unchanged compared with the same month last year, with the 14.8 million TEU down by a marginal 0.1 percent, or just 20,000 TEU. This has confounded industry analysts that are trying to make sense of the demand from economies battered by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and mostly in recession. The analyst said the only reasonable conclusion to draw was that in the month of July, global container demand had fully recovered to the level seen in 2019. Sweden and Korea fund e-commerce work to speed economic recovery Sweden and the Republic of Korea have provided $232,000 and $50,000 respectively to support UNCTAD’s work helping developing countries use e-commerce to tackle the economic fallout from COVID-19. E-commerce has emerged as a powerful tool deployed by developing and least developed countries to respond to the pandemic-induced economic crisis hitting their populations, which are heavily reliant on the informal econ...omy. The funds will allow UNCTAD to assess the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic on e-commerce, identify good practices across the world and recommend policies to help developing countries speed up their economic recovery. UNCTAD will also strengthen the capacity of developing nations to measure e-commerce and the digital economy as well as support multi-stakeholder dialogue on these topics. In addition, it will support the delivery of digital masterclasses under the eTrade for Women initiative, which empowers women digital entrepreneurs in developing countries. ASYCUDA marks 30 years of helping customs agencies boost revenue Report shows how UNCTAD's automated customs software has helped over 100 countries collect more customs duties, speed up trade and become more open for business. Afghanistan upgraded customs clearance procedures in 2016 with software developed by UNCTAD. The move helped the government collect an additional US$116 million on imported goods in 2017 and raise a record $1 billion in 2018.The extra revenue will allow... the government to invest more in development projects, such as roads and schools, as the conflict-affected mountainous nation in the middle of Asia rebuilds. Afghanistan is just one example of the impact UNCTAD’s automated customs and data software, ASYCUDA, has had in more than 100 countries over the past three decades. A report published on 24 June 2019 offers a detailed look at how ASYCUDA has helped governments collect more customs duties extra funds that could go a long way to help countries reach the UN-endorsed Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. But the achievements go beyond increased revenue, and the ASYCUDA Compendium 2019 provides examples of how the software has cut wait times at the border and made countries more business friendly. For example, at the Torkham border crossing between Afghanistan and Pakistan, almost all trucks are now cleared in less than 90 minutes a remarkable drop from the 18 hours it took in 2003.
