I had the privilege to write the script of The Mighty River, directed by Frederic Back and produced by the National Film Board of Canada. Nominated for best animated film by Oscars, it won the Los Angeles critic award for best animated film in 1994. The film is a love song to the St. Lawrence River, a tribute to a gentle giant whose beauty we have taken for granted. The film has a lot to teach us: about the history of the river and its astounding riches; about the people who ...have lived, and continue to live, on its shores. The story of the St. Lawrence is the story of the rivers of the world. It is the story of life itself-a fragile life that tentatively takes hold and then bursts forth. A life that abounds seemingly without end, only to wither under the relentless attacks of a rapacious and reckless humankind. One man's singular relation with the Führer. Extract: I, Adolf Hitler, on the day of my fiftieth anniversary, I know nothing about nothing, not even if I am human. I have never directly seen my face. I have never spoken with any other organ than a tongue. Traduttore traditore. I am not sure I had parents, that people exist when I am not around, that I will disappear after my death. I would like to want nothing- to become heavy, frozen, and predictable. But there will always... be a fraction of a second when I will not know what is going to happen. I have a nosebleed. I miss my dose of cocaine. It is dawn in Berlin. I await the Russians. I would like to be dispossessed. I would like to become a man without a history. Here is an amazing tale of love that plays out against the backdrop of a larger drama. It is a wild and fascinating story, an unsettling read from beginning to end. The novelty of Hitler’s Boat is twofold. The retrospectives at opposition in the story are German and Canadian, and these bring to life a fantasy of espionage rather than one of tragedy. The playful style serves as a counterpoint to the depth of the theme and gives its own originality to the novel. -Gabrielle Pascal, literary critic at Le Devoir Download Hitler's boat today at http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MS3X3V0

This will be my author page, devoted mainly to my works as novelist, historian, screenwriter and essayist. I will also post extracts from some of my works, past and in progress and write about my readings of others. I hope to get comments from my friends on the sixteen books that I have published, on my movies and theatre plays, on my different projects and about my fellow beloved writers.

In The First Person, a disillusioned computer programmer working for the police has decided to erase his identity. Leaving his old life behind, the man becomes a private detective in Los Angeles under a new, forged identity. He is hired to find a local gangster’s unfaithful wife, but after locating the woman, he falls in love with her. The pair plans to reunite after he returns her and collects his fee, but their plans are short circuited by her husband, who punishes her crue...lly for her betrayals. Devastated, the detective exacts his revenge. But soon, trapped by his own manipulations, he slowly falls into a quest that redefines his self image and world view. The First Person has been critically praised as an account of one man’s systematic reconstruction of his own personality. It won the Governor General Award (the Canadian Pulitzer prize) for Fiction. When I was writing a novel about Hitler's last days in Berlin, I decided to isolate myself in a small port called Paspebiac, on the eastern coast. I explained to the owner of the inn the nature of my work. He replied : Hitler? That's funny because we have his boat right here in the harbour! It turned out to be true. The Helgoland, Hitler's personal sailboat, which he was using mainly for film propaganda purposes, was dry-docked a few hundred yards from my hotel.
