Healthy boundaries require the use of punishment to ensure they are respected. There, I said it. Punishment may seem like a harsh word but really what I am talking about is a consequence that communicates to your dog that they have broken a boundary and they have to fall back into line. ... A punishment should never be given in anger, frustration or in revenge and should be established beforehand, as part of training. When I teach clients to punish their dogs’ unwanted behaviour, I do so with the utmost care and respect for the dog, and the relationship. It is never excessive, and it always ends when the unwanted behaviour stops. You can find insights and tips like this on my website under Dog Training Tips. Check it out by clicking the link below and, as always, feel free to ask your questions about setting boundaries or establishing punishments for your dog in the comments below. Here in Peterborough we are so lucky to have trails and parks to explore with the dogs anytime we like. As the weather gets colder, it is still important to get out with the dogs. Here are some great tips from the OSPCAto think about as you prepare for the fall and winter hiking season. If your dog is new to hiking, keep them on a leash. ... Don't leave your dog's waste on the trails. Make sure to check for ticks and fleas after a hike. Keep yourself and your pup hydrated, even in the cooler weather! Where will you be hiking this season? You might be curious to know, once you start using a prong or e-collar, how long will it be until you can phase them out? The short answer is when the dog no longer tests the limits and has resigned him or herself to following the leader (aka. You!) For some dogs, this happens in short order. Others may always need the guidance of a prong or e-collar to help them respect boundaries. For some dogs, the temptation of that squirrel is just too much to resist! As you and your d...og work together, you will know when the time is right or if your collar of choice is a permanent addition. If you need help learning the proper use of either prong or e-collars, don't hesitate to contact me here or through my website at http://www.turnerandpoochtraining.com #prongcollar #ecollar #dogtrainingtips #ptbo Peterborough Chamber of Commerce

Happy Thanksgiving! As you are celebrating with a hot meal, family and friends (in-person or virtually!) remember that some of our favourite holiday foods aren't good for everyone in your family. *ahem* Like your dog. Things like turkey, baked potatoes, peas, and even pumpkin can be shared with your pup but you will want to avoid foods like: ... Turkey skin Stuffing Casseroles Pies and other deserts Many of our favourite holiday foods are loaded with oils, butter, spices and sweeteners that can be bad - or even toxic - for dogs. If you've been here with me for a while now, you will know that I think that it is important to speak up about mental health. Depression, anxiety and many other mental health issues affect so many of us - including me. My dogs have truly been my secret weapon against depression! Their love is unconditional and they don't care when I fall into a slump. I am always so grateful for their ability to listen and give me a cuddle when I'm low. Having my dogs to care for also motiva...tes me to get up and moving when I don't feel like it. If you live with depression or other mental health issues, I encourage you to speak up and get the help you need. And, if you have a dog or another pet who is there for you when you need them, give them an extra scratch today to say 'Thank You.' #WorldMentalHealthDay #mentalhealthmatters #dogmomma #ptbo Peterborough Chamber of Commerce

What is your dog's body language telling you? While dogs can certainly communicate using sounds and signals, you can learn a lot about how your dog is feeling by observing their body language. A relaxed and approachable dog will display: ... a relaxed tail an easy stance ears up but not forward or laid back a mouth slightly open (maybe even a little tongue hanging out!) An alert and curious dog will likely have: their tail extended but not bristled or stiff and maybe moving back and forth a closed mouth ears up and forward a slight forward lean Finally, a dog that is fearful or aggressive may have: a lower body posture a tucked tail exposed teeth and emit growls tucked their ears back on their head It is important to learn how to read your dog's body language. Part of training your dog is learning to communicate. When you understand how to see your dog's physical cues you can respond accordingly and avoid "bad" and unwanted behaviours before they happen. #dogbehaviour #bodylanguage #dogtrainingtips #ptbo Peterborough Chamber of Commerce

It was a tough decision this week for who was the most improved!! Somuch progress made with everyone and their dogs, however this week its not a dog who is recognized, but the owner! This is true every week, but this past week the dogs we already pretty good, but their owner, Laurie needed some extra confidence to help her see how good her dogs were. So, this weeks most improved recognition goes to Laurie and her dogs Sam and Zoey!... Well done, guys!

Dogs understand our body language much better than our words, and our intentions are manifested through our body language. Therefore, it is very important that you think about what your intention is before you attempt any training with your dog. Here are some tips to help you keep your body language and your training intentions in synch: Don't start the training session worrying about problems that haven't happened yet like a sore shoulder or dealing with barking and pul...ling. Your stress and anxiety will show to your dog and make training more difficult. Have an action plan in place for if your dog behaves in an unwanted way. Knowing how you will correct him and continue will help keep you focused and confident. Your dog will notice. Be mindful of how you are holding and handling the leash. Your stress and tension will travel right down it to your dog and they may react to your emotions. Training is a two-way street. Both your dog and you, as the dog owner, need to be clear about what the goal is and how you are going to work together to achieve it. While there isn't much science to back it up, it has been observed that black dogs find it difficult when it comes to adoption. Especially larger black dogs who are often left forgotten in what many shelter workers call Black Dog Syndrome. It might be because black dogs (and cats) are associated with bad luck or aggression in popular culture. It could be as simple as the fact that black dogs don't photograph as well compared to their lighter coloured dog-pals! Does your dog bark when people or other dogs walk by your house? Most often this is your dog doing one of two things. Either they are alerting you to the fact that someone or something is nearby OR they are letting the perceived trespasser know that this patch of lawn is taken! Often, when a dog barks at strangers (be they canine, human, or automobile) it's because they aren't confident that you are going to take the lead and keep them safe. ... This could mean that there is some work to do on building up your dog's trust in you as pack leader. If you need help correcting your dog's barking or other unwanted behaviours, contact me to talk about my training services. I can help you and your dog build that trust! #ptbo #dogtrainingtips #leaderofhepack Peterborough Chamber of Commerce
