Anxious horses aren’t trying to be difficult; they are anxious because their brain is somewhere their body is not. For example, most of us don’t have a problem... riding our horses home but we have a problem riding our horses away because their mind never left the barn. Moving an anxious horse’s feet can help regulate behaviours stemming from the anxiety, but if we want to talk to the anxiety at its source, we need to be able to re-direct the horse’s thought when we pick up a rein. In the moment when you pick up the rein, your goal is to loan your horse a level of calm that starts within you and is stronger than the intensity of your horse’s anxiety. This is why you can only calm and soften the inner world of a horse to the degree that you are calm within yourself. Anxious horses need to know who is taking care of the world. One of the valuable assets we bring to our horses is our ability to see the scary things in their world without fear (like tarps, trailers, hoses, or snow falling off a roof, etc.). The really cool part is that when we share our perspective and build relationships that cultivate an inner softness or calmness in our horses, they are able to achieve a level of confidence that they would not be able to reach without us. #RelationalHorsemanship #AHorsemansPursuit #horsesofinstagram #horsetraining #horsetrainingtips #canon_photos #AndalusianHorse #greyandalusian @ Meanook, Alberta

"When we push a horse beyond their confidence level, especially when training them in the hackamore or bridle, to the point of fear and confusion, we must be ve...ry careful and back out of that area to minimize the damages. When the horse loses its confidence and we punish them and cause panic or resentment, we may create a situation that could take a multitude of good experiences to offset the one bad experience, and they may never trust that it won’t happen again." - Martin Black Read more about preparing your horse for the hackamore and bridle here: http://martinblack.net//preparing-your-horse-for-the-hacka
