From Ben Isitt: "This is totally preventable. People who love this coast can demand that the Government of Canada mandate immediately that the transport of oil and other dangerous goods between Washington State and Alaska be restricted to adequately powered and piloted tankers, travelling in offshore international waters. The owners of the Nathan E. Stewart and other American vessels have relied on an exemption to the Canada Shipping Act to traverse the Inside Passage, Johnst...one Strait and the Salish Sea with unpowered, unpiloted tanker-barges loaded with 10,000 tons of oil one third of the volume that was dumped by the Exxon Valdes in Prince William Sound. This travesty must stop, to protect the fragile coast and communities that rely on healthy marine ecosystems. Deliveries to BC coastal communities can be provided with smaller vessels, with stronger safety systems in place." See more
